The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has clarified that the 12-digit Aadhaar number is only proof of identity and not of citizenship. Apart from this, UIDAI has also said that Aadhaar card is not a proof of date of birth.
Actually, Aadhaar card is now connected to almost every essential service, but many people are still confused whether it can become a proof of date of birth or Indian citizenship. To end such rumours, UIDAI has given this clarification.
Postal Department issued order
The Department of Posts (under the Ministry of Communications) recently issued an order. It says that while the Aadhaar number can be used to prove the identity of an Aadhaar holder, it is not a definitive proof of citizenship, proof of residence or date of birth.
Therefore, do not use it conclusively to prove the date of birth. The government has also ordered all post offices to disseminate this information to all concerned and put it on notice boards in public areas.

Aadhaar enrollment and update will be free for newborn babies. Biometric update is mandatory for children at the age of 5 years, between 5-7 years and at 15-17 years. This clarity from UIDAI is necessary to prevent misuse of Aadhaar.
