FIDE revamps the FIDE Circuit for 2026-2027, introducing a two-year cycle, stricter event rules, new Open Circuit ranking, and updated qualification for Candidates 2028.

FIDE has officially approved a sweeping revamp of the FIDE Circuit, introducing a new two-year format and a series of regulatory changes that will take effect from January 1, 2026.
The updated rules reinforce the Circuit’s role as a unified, performance-based pathway to the elite level, placing greater emphasis on consistency, strength of opposition, and sustained participation at top tournaments.
Approved by the FIDE Council on December 26, 2025, the changes will govern the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
What’s New?
Two-Year Circuit Cycle
For the first time, the FIDE Circuit will span two seasons. Results from 2026 and 2027 will be combined into a single ranking, with a player’s final score calculated from their best 12 event performances across the cycle.
Stricter Balance Rules
To ensure competitive depth, limits are placed on the types of events counted. No more than four rapid or blitz tournaments may contribute to a full score, while caps are introduced on the number of smaller-field events. Classical chess remains the backbone of the Circuit.
Clearer Path to Candidates 2028
To qualify for the 2028 Candidates Tournament via the Circuit, players must feature in at least eight eligible events, including a minimum of five standard time-control tournaments. Participation requirements now favour large, high-strength competitions.
New Open Circuit Sub-Ranking
FIDE has introduced a dedicated Open Circuit ranking for tournaments with 50+ players. Top performers will earn qualification opportunities for select FIDE events, strengthening the bridge between open tournaments and elite competition.
Updated Tournament Strength Formula
Tournament strength will now be calculated using the average rating of the top 12 players, up from eight, offering a more accurate reflection of elite fields.
Expanded Rapid & Blitz Eligibility
The minimum average rating threshold for rapid and blitz events has been lowered from 2700 to 2650, though reduced weightings will still apply.
Total Chess Tour Added
The Total Chess World Championship Tour (2026–27) is now formally included, with results counting toward Circuit scores under defined coefficients.
World Championship Bonus Adjusted
Bonus points for the World Championship runner-up have been reduced, ensuring tournament performance carries greater overall weight.
FIDE retains final authority over the regulations, with any unforeseen cases referred to the FIDE President for resolution.
