PM Modi and Chinese President Jinping went to Russia to attend the BRICS Summit in 2024. Both leaders met in Kazan city there.

China has said that it welcomes Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit to be held in Tianjin. This will be the first time PM Modi will visit China after a 2020 clash in Galwan Valley.

Before China, PM Modi will reach Japan on 30 August. Here he will take part in the India-Japan Summit.

Modi went there in 2018 earlier. This will be the sixth visit to China of PM Modi as Prime Minister, which is the highest visit to any Indian PM in 70 years.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lynn Gian posted on X and said that the summit to be held from August 31 to September 1 will include leaders from more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organizations.

Jaishankar visited China last month

Last month, External Affairs Minister S.K. Jaishankar visited China, where he met President Xi Jinping and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Jaishankar spoke on issues like sharing water resource data, sharing trading restrictions, reducing tension on LAC and taking a tough stand against terrorism and extremism. According to media reports, the meeting had prepared a roadmap for Modi’s visit to China.

The last time Modi and Jinping met in Russia

Modi and Jinping last met in October 2024 during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. During this time there was also bilateral conversation between the two.

In a 50 -minute conversation, PM Modi said that ‘maintaining peace and stability on the border should be our priority. Mutual belief, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity should remain the foundation of our relationship.

PM Modi’s visit to China is taking place at a time when the whole world is struggling with the tariff policies of US President Trump. Trump has announced 25% tariffs on India due to Russian oil and weapon purchase.

India is the largest buyer of Russian oil in the world after China. India buys 17.8 lakh barrels of crude oil from Russia every day.

Jinping visited India in 2019

Xi Jinping last visited India in 2019. The two leaders then met in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. This journey was an important step towards strengthening India-China relations and managing mutual differences.

The two leaders also agreed to maintain peace and stability on the border.

SCO was established in 2001

Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is a regional international organization founded in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Later India and Pakistan joined it in 2017. In 2023, Iran also became a member of it.

The SCO aims to increase security, economic and political cooperation among the member countries. The organization formulates a shared strategy on issues like terrorism, extremism, drug smuggling and cyber crime.
