In their complaint, the family said the student suffered severe leg pain and swelling after being forced to do sit-ups, and was later taken to an orthopaedic doctor

The complaint claimed that the boy had not informed his parents immediately about the incident, hoping not to worry them.

A teacher at a Dehradun coaching centre has been booked after allegedly forcing an 18-year-old student to do 400 sit-ups as punishment for talking during class.

The incident took place on July 4 at a coaching institute in the city’s Vasant Vihar area. The student, a native of Meghalaya, was enrolled at the centre to prepare for defence entrance exams.

According to the police, an FIR has been filed against the mathematics teacher, identified as Jai Singh. The FIR was registered at the Vasant Vihar police station on July 21 after a formal complaint was initially filed by the student’s parents at the Laban police station in Shillong on July 14, The Indian Express reported.

In the complaint, the family stated that the student was left in severe pain and had swelling in his legs, which made it difficult for him to walk. Though he attempted to attend classes on July 7 and 8, his condition worsened. He began to suffer from intense pain, cramps, and spasms, after which his paying guest (PG) accommodation owner took him to an orthopaedic doctor for treatment.

The complaint also claimed that the boy had not informed his parents immediately about the incident, hoping not to worry them. However, when his health deteriorated, he was forced to speak up.

The parents said the coaching institute admitted the incident took place and assured them that action would be taken against the teacher. However, the complaint noted that no action was taken.

The family also stated that the incident had left the student physically, mentally, and emotionally traumatised. He has not been able to attend any classes since the incident.

The complaint further alleged that the student was asked to visit the institute again under the pretext of document verification, despite all admission procedures being completed earlier in April. The family found this suspicious. The institute also reportedly asked the student to resume classes from July 15, despite being aware of his health condition.

Pradeep Singh Rawat, in charge of the Vasant Vihar police station, confirmed that the case had been transferred from Meghalaya and registered under Section 117(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Rawat stated that an investigation has started. “The victim’s and his father’s statements have been recorded. The allegations are true prima facie,” he added.
