Amid rising cases relating to crimes against women, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday transferred 49 IAS officers in the state in a massive administrative reshuffle.

Key appointments include:

  • Sanjeeb Mishra: Finance Secretary
  • NBS Rajput: Secretary, MSME
  • Hemant Sharma: Additional Chief Secretary, Information & Public Relations
  • Guha Define Saint: RDC, Central Division
  • B Parameswaran: Secretary, SC/ST Development
  • Rupa Roshan Sahu: Secretary to the Governor
  • Bhaskarjyoti Sharma: Excise Secretary
  • Chanchal Rana: Commissioner, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC)

This comes as the state has witnessed a rise in cases concerning criminal activities against women.

The Balasore self-immolation case of a college student grabbed the headlines, after a 20-year-old student set herself on fire on the premises after the college administration failed to act on her complaint of sexual harassment against the head of the department. She later died at AIIMS Bhubaneswar during treatment.

In another incident, a 15-year-old girl was set on fire by a few miscreants at Balanga in the Puri district last week.

Several rape cases have also come to light, including in Malkangiri, Jajpur.

In Malkangiri, a girl was raped allegedly by four people, including a truck driver, when she had gone to her friend’s house on Sunday night. All four persons were arrested, the police said.

In Jajpur, a 15-year-old hockey trainee was raped. The incident came to light on Monday after the minor filed a complaint at the police station, alleging that her coach and his two associates had abducted her when she was on her way back to her home on July 3 and raped her in a lodge, the police said. The accused have been arrested.

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday said that the BJP government must act immediately to restore trust in the system.

Expressing anguish over the rape cases, Patnaik said, “these incidents horrify all of us”.

“A disturbing wave of crimes against women is gripping Odisha. Both in cities and villages, the streets have become increasingly unsafe for women– in broad daylight and night,” he tweeted.
