Students of Calcutta University-affiliated colleges may not get a full summer break this year, as the university has advised institutions to continue holding classes during the summer vacation to complete their undergraduate syllabus. According to an official notification, classes are to continue during the summer recess from May 29 to June 30, 2025. “This is to be taken as an advisory to the colleges,” the statement clarified.
Speaking to PTI, CU Registrar Debasis Das said the advisory was issued to compensate for the shortfall in academic days caused by delays in the 2024–25 admission process. “We are leaving it for colleges to decide how to carry this forward — by online mode, physical classes or a hybrid mode,” he added.
Last year’s admissions were delayed by a month due to uncertainty over whether the process would be held through a centralised or decentralised system. Eventually, admissions were conducted via a centralised portal, which pushed the start of the academic session further.
Reacting to the advisory, Siuli Sarkar, principal of Lady Brabourne College, said the summer vacation has already started at her institution. “It is up to the teachers to decide whether they want to take classes on campus or conduct them online,” she said.
Jaideep Sarangi, CU chapter president of the All Bengal Principals Council and principal of New Alipore College, also clarified that the university’s move is “an advisory, not an order.” He added, “Just like in previous years, we have taken all necessary steps to ensure the syllabus is completed on time, be it online classes or by other means.”
Meanwhile, Calcutta University has invited applications for admission to the PhD programme in Computer Science and Engineering. Interested candidates can apply by filling out the application form available on the university’s official website. Both the filled form and payment receipt must be submitted by June 8, 2025. The written test for eligible applicants is tentatively scheduled for June 20, 2025, followed by interviews on June 26, 2025
