At least six people, including a nine-year-old boy, were injured after a taxicab hit multiple pedestrians in midtown Manhattan, New York, on Wednesday. According to the Associated Press, three of the injured were taken to a hospital and were being treated for their injuries.

The other three people who were hit by the taxi refused medical attention and were reported to be stable.

The report quoted a New York Police Department spokesperson as saying that the taxi driver “may have suffered a medical episode”.

However, an official confirmation on the same was awaited.

Video footage at the scene showed a damaged yellow taxi on the sidewalk cordoned off by police tape.

The car’s front bumper appeared to have fallen off. Later in the evening, the taxi was towed away.

Two people, including the 9-year-old boy, were taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center, and one person was taken to Bellevue Hospital, the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

The taxi cab jumped the curb near Macy’s flagship store at Herald Square around 4 pm (local Manhattan time) and hit the pedestrians on the sidewalk, the report quoted the police as saying, adding that the driver remained at the scene.

“One gentleman went over [to] shut the car off, got into it and shut it off. There was a whole group of us that ripped the fender off, lifted the car back,” one of the witnesses, whose wife was among those injured, told the New York Post.

“I was parked in front of this car and I saw the car going onto the sidewalk and hitting people,” Sam Mohammed, 35, a hot dog stand worker told the New York Post. He was serving customers when the taxi slammed onto the sidewalk mere feet away from him.

There was no information on whether the taxi driver was arrested.
