Voting for by-elections was held on Wednesday in all 288 assembly seats of Maharashtra and 38 assembly seats of Jharkhand, 15 assembly seats of 4 states and Nanded Lok Sabha seat.
65.11% voting took place in Maharashtra. This is about 4% more than the last assembly elections. In the 2019 elections, 61.4% voting took place here.
In Jharkhand, 67.83% votes were cast in the second phase. In the first phase, 66.65% voting took place here. In the 2019 elections, there was 67.04% voting in Jharkhand.
Violence took place during by-election voting in UP. During the by-election voting in Meerapur seat of Muzaffarnagar district, a crowd pelted stones at the police. The police had to run away to save their lives.
Later, to disperse the crowd, Inspector Rajeev Sharma of Kakrauli police station pointed his revolver at the women present there and said – go away from here, otherwise I will shoot you.

Current status of Maharashtra Assembly


According to the Election Commission, a total of 4136 candidates from various parties including independents are in the fray. The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has prepared a report after examining the affidavits of 2201 of these candidates.
According to this, about 29 percent i.e. 629 candidates are of criminal background. Of these, 412 have serious cases registered against them like murder, kidnapping, rape. 50 candidates are accused of crimes related to women.
By-election: Out of 15 seats, BJP, Congress and SP have 4 seats each. Out of 15 seats for assembly by-elections, 13 seats have become vacant due to MLAs becoming MPs, 1 death and 1 going to jail. Of these, 2 seats are reserved for SC. Maximum voting took place on 9 seats in Uttar Pradesh. Of the 15 seats, BJP, Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) had 4 seats each and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Nishad Party had 1 seat each.
Nanded Lok Sabha seat of Maharashtra has become vacant due to the death of Congress MP Vasantrao Chavan. He died in August 2024, just two months after the Lok Sabha elections. The party has made his son Ravindra Chavan its candidate. Whereas, BJP has fielded Dr. Santuk Humbarde.
Earlier, voting on 14 seats in 3 states was to be held on November 13, but due to Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Prakash Parv and Kalapathy Rastholsevam festivals, the Election Commission had changed the date.
