These are the words of Krishna Devi sitting near the dead bodies of her daughter, son-in-law and two granddaughters. Krishna is in disarray after this massacre. Sometimes she cursed her fate and sometimes Chandan Verma. Many women are sitting silently around him. Sunil’s mother was fainting while crying. When she regained consciousness, she started crying again after seeing her son’s dead body.

20 years ago the family came from Tanda and settled in Rae Bareli. We reached Telia Kot locality of Rae Bareli. It is inside the city itself. It was here that Chandan Verma’s father lived with his brothers in a rented house in the house of Awadhesh Gupta. On reaching here we met Awadhesh’s son Ankit Gupta. He says, Chandan’s father has a total of 8 brothers. 4 came from Tanda, Ambedkar Nagar in the 90s. Everyone lived at our place on rent. Stayed on rent till 2010. After this, Chandan’s father Mayaram Verma settled in Delhi with his family. The remaining brothers took land here and built a house.
Ankit says that the whole family remained in Delhi but Chandan came back to Rae Bareli and started living in a rented house in Matia area. He had studied X-ray, so he started working here. He has been staying in our house, hence he would come from time to time with Bullet and say that if there is any need, let us know. Now we have started earning. I didn’t take any help. He was very stubborn by nature. Used to drink a lot. That’s why we stayed away.
Teacher also took a house on rent in Rae Bareli Teacher Sunil Kumar was married on April 12, 2016. At that time Sunil used to sell goods at grocery shops in every village. When he passed the police recruitment exam in 2018, he got recruited in the police. On December 10, 2020, he got a job in the Basic Education Department. After this Sunil left the police job. At that time Sunil was not appointed in any school, he was attached to the BSA office. Sunil’s house was about 35 kilometers away from Rae Bareli district headquarters. Therefore, he started living here in Matiya area with his family.
Chandan already lived there where Sunil took the room. The two became acquainted here. Chandan often came to Sunil’s house. It was here that he became closer to Poonam. But on March 12, 2021, Sunil was appointed to Panhauna Primary School in Singhpur block in Amethi district. Sunil went to Amethi with his family. Earlier he used to live somewhere else, for the last three months he was living in Munna Awasthi’s house at Ahorva Bhawani intersection. Elder daughter Drishti used to go to school from here.
When Sunil bought the land, Chandan was a witness in it. After appointment, Sunil went to Amethi with his family. Chandan used to reach here often. Till this time there was no dispute of any kind between the two. WhatsApp chat and calling reveal that he used to talk to Poonam for a long time. Gradually Sunil tried to distance himself from Chandan, but this could not happen.
All four dead bodies were kept outside Sunil’s house. Poonam’s mother was lying near the dead body in an unconscious state. We talked. Asked about sandalwood. She says, we had no prior knowledge about sandalwood. On April 1 this year, Sunil had purchased 2 Biswa land in Rae Bareli in the name of Poonam. Chandan was a witness in this. But after this he started harassing my daughter.
Poonam’s mother says, he used to tell my daughter to leave Sunil and marry me. But my daughter refused. That’s why he used to harass my daughter. He used to send dirty photos to Sunil and ask him to leave Poonam. Sunil used to say that I will not leave, she is my wife.
Chandan’s nature is stubborn, hence he killed everyone When asked about Chandan, the people of the locality say in front of the camera that he used to drink alcohol and used to use bullets to show his prestige. Becomes silent when asked more. But after switching off the camera, he says that Chandan was very stubborn. Had an eccentric temperament. Once he decided to do something, he did it without considering its profit or loss. This obsession filled his mind that he would destroy everything related to Poonam. That’s why he killed innocent children also.
An example of sandalwood craze was seen 48 days ago i.e. on 18th August. A day before Rakshabandhan, he misbehaved with Poonam. Poonam registered a case in the police station. Told, ‘Chandan did obscene acts with me. They slapped me and my husband Sunil and threatened to kill them. If any incident or accident happens to me and my husband in future, Chandan Verma will be responsible for it.
After this FIR, on August 19, the police arrested Chandan and sent him to jail. He got bail after 3 days. He came home and consumed poison. He was first admitted to the local hospital and then to AIIMS. After this eccentricity of his, Sunil and Poonam thought it appropriate to compromise. Chandan folded his hands and apologized in front of the Inspector at Makdoompur post and said that he will not do anything wrong in future. However, even on this Sunil did not withdraw the case.
Two cousins in custody, family said we are not concerned with Chandan Dainik Bhaskar team also went to Chandan’s uncle’s house. We tried to talk, but got the reply that we did not want to talk. After some time, Chandan’s aunt came out and said – We have nothing to do with Chandan and his family. They live in Delhi and we live here. Our two boys Shiva and Vikas have been taken away, whereas we have nothing to do with Chandan.
