The government has also announced a compensatory working day on Saturday, November 28, 2026. Employees and institutions covered by the order will need to follow the revised schedule.
Deepavali falls on Sunday this year. The additional holiday on Monday, November 9, is intended to give people more time to celebrate the festival with their families and return from their hometowns.
Essential staff at treasuries and sub-treasuries will continue to work, according to media reports on the announcement.
Meanwhile, Bihar government schools are scheduled to remain closed from November 7 to 17, 2026, according to the state Education Department’s holiday calendar for the year. The holiday period covers major festivals, including Diwali, Chitragupt Puja, Bhai Dooj and Chhath Puja.
Apart from the Diwali and Chhath Puja break, schools are scheduled to observe a holiday on November 24 for Guru Nanak Jayanti and Kartik Purnima. The winter vacation is planned for December 25 to 31.
The annual holiday calendar applies to government, government-aided, project and upgraded primary, secondary and higher secondary schools in Bihar. It also covers Sanskrit, Urdu and madrasa schools listed under the department’s schedule. Private schools are likely to follow their own academic calendars, so students and parents are advised to confirm the holiday dates with their respective institutions.
The scheduled festival break runs through November 17. Schools are expected to resume classes after the holiday period, subject to any subsequent instructions issued by the Education Department or local authorities.
Students and parents are advised to check school notices for confirmation of reopening dates and any changes to the schedule.
