More than 1600 attacks on Ukraine’s railway network

Russia launched more than 1,600 attacks on Ukraine’s railway network in the first 8 months of 2026. In these, trains, railway engines and other railway related facilities were targeted.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha, Russia has damaged or destroyed more than 500 locomotives since the war began in 2022. More than half of these incidents occurred this year.

For Ukraine, railways are an important means of transportation of passengers as well as essential goods and grains. In such a situation, the country’s transport system is being affected by attacks on railways.

According to Ukraine’s former Deputy Transport Minister Vasyl Shevchenko, an attack on a railway engine could bring traffic on the entire railway route to a standstill. Due to the large amount of fuel in a diesel engine, an explosion can result in a massive fire. At the same time, attack on the electric engine can also cause fire and a part of the track can be closed for a long time.

Ukraine’s preparation to keep railways safe

In view of the threat of Russian drone attacks, Ukraine’s state railway company has set up monitoring centers to monitor the activities of trains and drones. When danger signal is received, trains are stopped and efforts are made to take passengers to safe places.

But the use of fast drones with jet engines gives security agencies less time to react. For this reason, in Ukraine, if there is a possibility of danger, the system of stopping trains in advance and taking passengers by buses to high-risk areas is being increased.
