The hunger strike of five students of Jamia Millia Islamia University continued for the 13th day on Saturday. Students are demanding reinstatement of the Students Union (JMISU) in Jamia and removal of the Chief Proctor. Jamia’s student union was dissolved in March 2006. Meanwhile, the management has announced to make all the course classes online. This arrangement will remain in force with immediate effect until further orders. In the notice, the university has asked all deans, heads of departments, directors, teachers and regular students to follow the schedule of online classes. In the notice, teachers have been asked to arrange online classes. Also, instructions have been given to provide necessary help to the students. Picture of vacating the protest site… AISA’s allegation on the administration AISA said in the press release, “The students who are on hunger strike and the protest site are being attacked. This shows the most cruel face of the Jamia administration.” Jasim Ali Khan, who has been on hunger strike since the beginning of the protest, accused the university administration of taking action. He demanded cancellation of the suspension of the students. Another student protester, Anas, demanded withdrawal of the show cause notice issued to the students by the proctor and disciplinary committee. Anas said that the protest will continue until the students’ union is reinstated. Students’ statement on ‘Free Kashmir’ slogan Anas also talked about the ongoing controversy regarding graffiti with ‘Free Kashmir’ slogan in the university campus. He said that a narrative is being spread to disrupt the peaceful protest. He demanded the university administration to investigate the matter. Anas said, “We do not know whether this narrative is being spread by the administration or someone else. This is a matter of investigation, because the security of Jamia is the responsibility of the administration. The cameras should be checked and it should be seen who is writing such slogans. This will clear the matter.” Anas said that the protesters and the students who are on hunger strike are not involved in this at all. According to him, the protest has been peaceful since day one and will remain peaceful in future also. Protest continues from October 12: Jamia students started protest and hunger strike on October 12. They are demanding reinstatement of the students’ union. In the initial days of the protest, Delhi Police had tried to remove the students from the designated protest site on the campus. After this the performance increased further. Entry of politics in the students’ protest: On Friday, Congress MP Imran Masood and SP MP Mohibullah Nadvi came in support. Delhi Police detained both of them, accused them of climbing the wall and entering, they were later released. Nadvi accused him of pushing and shoving. Imran Masood said – “Not a single Free Kashmir slogan was raised there, Kashmir is an integral part of India, action should be taken against those who put up the posters”. Apart from these, JNU, DUSU, AMU student organizations have also received support.
