The BJP on Saturday launched a sharp attack on National Conference president Farooq Abdullah after his remarks on Pakistan’s role in raising the Kashmir issue at international forums triggered a political row. Jammu and Kashmir BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur called Abdullah’s comments “seditious and anti-national” and demanded that he be booked.

Abdullah made the remarks while addressing a party workers’ convention in Baramulla. Referring to Pakistan’s international campaign on Kashmir, he said, “Pakistan is going to many places and talking about Kashmiris. That is why the people of Jammu and Kashmir are being saved. Otherwise, India’s intentions towards Kashmiris are not right.”

His comments drew an immediate response from the BJP, with Thakur accusing the NC chief of giving legitimacy to Pakistan’s position on Kashmir and questioning India’s intentions towards its own citizens.

“Farooq Abdullah’s pro-Pakistan statement is seditious and anti-national, and he should be booked for making such remarks,” Thakur said. He argued that a senior political leader who has taken an oath under the Indian Constitution should exercise caution while speaking on matters concerning national security.

Thakur also hit back at Abdullah over his reference to Pakistan, saying that if the NC chief had so much faith in the neighbouring country, he should go there. He further claimed that people living in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) were unhappy with Pakistan’s rule and wanted to join India.

The BJP leader accused Pakistan of contributing to decades of violence in Jammu and Kashmir through its alleged support for terrorism. He said the region had witnessed bloodshed, targeted killings and the loss of innocent lives for years.

“Pakistan has given Kashmir nothing but terrorism, bloodshed, fear and uncertainty,” Thakur said, questioning how Pakistan could be portrayed as a force protecting Kashmiris while its alleged role in the violence was overlooked.

Thakur further argued that Pakistan’s efforts to raise the Kashmir issue at international forums could not, in his view, erase its responsibility for the suffering caused by terrorism. He said the priorities of people in Jammu and Kashmir were peace, development, employment, tourism and a secure future for their children.

The BJP spokesperson also criticised the National Conference’s approach to sensitive national issues. He alleged that the party’s statements often failed to acknowledge the sacrifices of civilians and security personnel during years of conflict and counter-terror operations.

Thakur said India’s democratic and constitutional system provided people in Jammu and Kashmir with political avenues to raise their concerns. He contrasted this with Pakistan’s administration of PoJK, which he claimed had resulted in widespread discontent.

He also questioned Abdullah over his decision to credit Pakistan with keeping the Kashmir issue alive internationally while, according to him, not adequately addressing the suffering caused by terrorism.

Thakur urged political leaders to exercise responsibility while commenting on matters related to national security. He called on the authorities to examine Abdullah’s remarks under the law and take appropriate action if warranted.

He said Jammu and Kashmir needed political leadership focused on public welfare, economic development and lasting peace rather than statements that, in the BJP’s view, could strengthen Pakistan’s narrative.
