Amid the ongoing protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has called for a key meeting of its MPs in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday. The meeting will be chaired by the party’s chief and former Chief Minister MK Stalin.

The meeting comes amid parallel protests by the opposition INDIA bloc and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in Delhi, seeking the rollback of the controversial SIR and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

On Friday, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi targeted the Centre over the SIR process. She alleged that voters were being deprived of their voting rights.

Kanimozhi participated in a protest organized by student groups at Chennai’s Rajarathinam Stadiumexpressing solidarity with the protesters’ demand seeking the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

Writing on X, she said, “I participated in and addressed a protest organized by student groups at Chennai’s Rajarathinam Stadium, expressing solidarity with their demands that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign for allegedly using the Election Commission like an extension of the BJP and thereby undermining the country’s democracy and the people’s voting rights.”

“The protesters also demanded the withdrawal of the allegedly irregularly conducted Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise”, she said.

Kanimozhi also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, “The Prime Minister attends Parliament for only a limited number of days. Whenever Parliament is in session, the Prime Minister is abroad.”

“I do not know whether they have reduced the number of parliamentary working days because he is unable to be present”, she said.
