The JEE Advanced examination is among the most important entrance tests for engineering aspirants seeking admission to the IITs. Only the top 1.5 lakh candidates of JEE Main are eligible to appear for the IIT JEE. This year, IIT Roorkee conducted the examination, and the Joint Implementation Committee has now released its official report analysing candidates’ performance across individual questions.

The report offers a detailed look at which questions proved most challenging for candidates. One Physics question was left unanswered by more than 70% of candidates, while four Chemistry questions were skipped by more than 60% of those who appeared for the exam.

The analysis provides useful insights into the difficulty level of the JEE Advanced 2026 paper and could also help aspirants preparing for JEE Advanced 2027 understand which types of questions proved particularly challenging this year.

JEE Advanced 2026 Exam Pattern

JEE Advanced consists of two papers — Paper 1 and Paper 2 — with questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Paper 1 had 16 questions in each subject, taking the total to 48 questions, while Paper 2 had 18 questions in each subject, for a total of 54 questions.

Around 1.79 lakh candidates appeared for JEE Advanced 2026. While Mathematics was considered relatively easier compared with previous years, Physics and Chemistry posed a greater challenge to candidates, according to the analysis.

Physics Paper 1, Question 2 Was The Most Difficult

Physics Paper 1, Question 2 emerged as the most challenging question in the JEE Advanced 2026 paper, according to the IIT Roorkee report.

Of the approximately 1.79 lakh candidates who appeared for the examination, 1,28,000 candidates, or 71.89%, did not attempt the question.

Among those who attempted it, 24,933 candidates, or 13.88%, answered incorrectly. Overall, nearly 85% of candidates scored zero on the question.

Four Chemistry Questions Were Skipped By More Than 60%

Chemistry also had several questions that a large majority of candidates chose to leave unanswered. According to the report by IIT Roorkee:

Chemistry Paper 1, Question 1: 66.59% of candidates did not attempt the question, while around 19% answered incorrectly. Overall, about 85% of candidates scored zero.

Chemistry Paper 1, Question 4: 62.27% of candidates skipped the question and around 27% answered incorrectly. Nearly 90% scored zero.

Chemistry Paper 2, Question 1: 67.42% of candidates did not attempt the question, while around 20% answered incorrectly.

Chemistry Paper 2, Question 3: 62.45% of candidates left the question unanswered and around 27% answered incorrectly. Nearly 89% scored zero.

The findings show that some questions were challenging not merely because candidates answered them incorrectly, but because a large majority chose not to attempt them at all.
