It is the year 1943. A young boy moves from Lahore to Mumbai to fulfill his dreams. There were only 30 rupees in his pocket and no place to stay. I had a dream of making a mark in the film industry, but the biggest challenge before me was how to survive in a city like Mumbai. Initially he had to live in a chawl. After a few days the money started running out. There seemed to be no hope of getting work in films. Ultimately he had to do a job to earn his living. He got a job as a clerk in the Military Censor Office, where he worked as a military censor for the British government. He used to get a salary of Rs 65 per month. But the boy who had only 30 rupees to reach Mumbai, did not give up. After a few years, the same person became such a star of Hindi cinema that people started calling him ‘Evergreen Star’. We are talking about Dev Anand and on his 103rd birth anniversary, let us know some special things related to his life… Father was associated with the freedom movement. Dev Anand was born on 26 September 1923 as Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, British India. His father Pishori Lal Anand was a lawyer in Gurdaspur and was also associated with the freedom movement. Dev Anand was the third among four brothers. His brothers Chetan Anand and Vijay Anand were also associated with the film industry, while his sister Sheel Kanta Kapoor was the mother of film director Shekhar Kapur. He did his early schooling from Sacred Heart School, Dalhousie and later did BA in English Literature from Government College, Lahore. Father had refused to give money for studies. Dev Anand wanted to study further and dreamed of going to London for higher education, while his father wanted him to get a job in a bank, but the financial condition of the family was not such that the expenses for his further studies could be borne. The father clearly said that now there is no money for his studies. After this, Dev Anand decided that if he has to struggle in life, then why not struggle for his childhood dream of acting. To fulfill this dream, in June 1943, he took a train from Lahore and left for Mumbai. Initially, he did not get work and ran out of money, so he took a job in the Military Censor Office at Churchgate at a monthly salary of Rs 65. Later, he also worked as a clerk in an accounting firm at a salary of Rs 85. He got his desire to become an actor from Ashok Kumar’s films. After working in the Military Censor Office for about a year, Dev Anand went to his elder brother Chetan Anand. At that time Chetan was associated with Bharatiya Jana Natya Sangh i.e. IPTA. He also included his younger brother with him. From here Dev Anand got a chance to work in theater and learn acting. Then luck favored us. In the year 1946, he got a chance to work in Prabhat Talkies’ film ‘Hum Ek Hain’. The friendship between Dev Anand and Guru Dutt started with the exchange of shirts. Dev Anand was working as a hero in the film ‘Hum Ek Hain’, while Guru Dutt was working there as an assistant director and choreographer. The clothes of everyone in the studio went to the same washerman. One day the washerman made such a mistake that Dev Anand’s white shirt went along with Guru Dutt’s clothes. Guru Dutt wore that shirt and reached the studio. When Dev Anand saw his shirt on Guru Dutt’s body, both of them came face to face. But there was no resentment about the shirt. Both of them laughed a lot at this strange coincidence. This small incident later became the beginning of their deep friendship. Both of them also worked together later. Dev Anand gave Guru Dutt a chance to direct the film ‘Baji’. This film, released in 1951, became an important beginning of Guru Dutt’s directorial career and his friendship with Dev Anand was also seen on the cinema screen. The film ‘Ziddi’ changed the direction of Dev Anand’s career. Ashok Kumar gave him a chance to work in this film. The film was successful and Dev Anand got recognition. After this, instead of stopping at just becoming an actor, he decided to make films himself. Started Navketan Films in 1949 with elder brother Chetan Anand. ‘Baaji’, made under this banner, was released in 1951. This film was successful and Dev Anand’s star image became stronger. Many of Dev Anand’s films were successful in the 1950s. Films like ‘Jaal’, ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘CID’, ‘Paying Guest’ and ‘Kala Paani’ put him in the league of big stars. His sharp style of speaking, dialogue delivery and special style in front of the camera were liked by the audience. The way he used to shake his head while talking also became his identity. ‘Guide’ gave a new identity to his career. The 1960s were special for Dev Anand’s romantic hero era. Films like ‘Hum Dono’, ‘Tere Ghar Ke Samne’, ‘Jewel Thief’ and ‘Guide’ further strengthened his stardom. ‘Guide’, released in 1965, became one of the most talked about films of his career. Waheeda Rehman was with him in the film. This film is by R.K. It was based on Narayan’s novel and Dev Anand had an important role in its film adaptation. In the film, he played a character which was quite different from his image of an ordinary romantic hero. ‘Guide’ also established him as a serious actor. However, in an interview given to DD National, Dev Anand had told about the film ‘Guide’ that when he had planned this film, many people had even called him mad. According to Dev Anand, people thought that the film would not pass the censor board because its story had an angle of adultery. Apart from this, considering his romantic hero image, people were also afraid that the audience would not accept him in the role of a saint. Dev Anand had told that initially there were a lot of apprehensions regarding the film. At the time of release, the film did not get the same success and it was also becoming difficult to sell. However, with time ‘Guide’ gained recognition among the audience and critics and later became a cult film. The boat overturned and the love story with Suraiya began. The love story of Dev Anand and Suraiya is one of the most talked about and incomplete love stories of Hindi cinema. Dev Anand and Suraiya’s love story started during the shooting of the film ‘Vidya’. During the shooting of a song, the boat overturned and Suraiya fell into the water. Dev Anand jumped into the water to save him. After this incident, the closeness between the two increased and gradually this relationship turned into love. Dev Anand later described Suraiya as the first true love of his life in an interview. During the shooting of the film ‘Jeet’, he proposed Suraiya for marriage. According to Dev Anand, Suraiya had also accepted his proposal. Dev Anand had sent a diamond ring worth Rs 3,000 to Suraiya. Later many stories came to light regarding this ring. It was said that Suraiya had thrown it into the sea. However, Dev Anand himself said that he did not know what exactly happened with the ring. The family did not approve of the relationship. Both wanted to get married, but Suraiya’s family was against this relationship. Dev Anand had told in Simi Garewal’s show that he felt that the family did not want Suraiya to marry a Hindu youth. According to Dev Anand, Suraiya was very close to her grandmother and family. Her grandmother was also present on the shooting with Suraiya. In a scene in a film, Dev Anand had to kiss Suraiya’s eyes. At that time there were censor objections regarding such scenes. Suraiya’s grandmother was present on the set and was not moving away from there. Dev Anand had told that the shooting team somehow convinced him to take Suraiya out for some time and talk to him. As soon as he left, Dev Anand and Suraiya quickly shot the scene. ‘I cried and then strengthened myself’ When Simi Garewal asked Dev Anand whether Suraiya ever told him that the family was against the marriage, he said that Suraiya never told him so directly. However, she later realized that she was under family pressure. There came a time when Dev Anand was not able to meet Suraiya directly. He had to send letters to Suraiya through another person. When Dev Anand got the news of Suraiya’s demise, he was very sad. He had told that Suraiya was in the hospital, but he did not go to meet her. He said that he did not want to expose his personal sorrow to the world. He was afraid that the media would gather around him and ask him questions continuously. After separation from Suraiya, marriage with Kalpana Karthik, time moved forward and actress Mona Singh came into Dev Anand’s life, who was known as Kalpana Karthik in the film industry. Both of them fell in love during the shooting of the film ‘Taxi Driver’ (1954). Both of them got married secretly on the sets during the lunch break of the shooting and after the break was over, they came back in front of the camera and started giving shots.
