There has been a controversy over Karnataka CM DK Shivakumar’s statement about MLAs doing double marriages. Shivakumar was talking about the increasing pressure on Bengaluru due to rapid urbanization in the Assembly on Thursday. He said, Kempegowda created Bengaluru. Kengal Hanumanthaiah built Vidhana Soudha. SM Krishna made Bengaluru an international city. Whoever comes to the city does not leave from here. He further said, even you (MLAs) who come here, do not go back. Everyone who comes to the city has two weddings. There are about a dozen such people. I can give you a list of them. After this statement of Shivkumar, BJP leaders talked about making the name public. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R Ashok said that now questions have been raised on every MLA who has come from outside Bengaluru. BJP MLA said – Outsiders will be viewed with suspicion. BJP MLA S Suresh Kumar also criticized the statement. He said that Shivkumar may have said this jokingly, but such remarks in the Assembly House do not enhance his dignity. He said, if I had been present in the Assembly, I would have replied immediately. Kumar said that Shivkumar’s statement has aroused curiosity among the people. He demanded that the Chief Minister reveal the names of those MLAs who have two marriages and who are living with two families. He said that if the names are not disclosed then the people of the state may look at all the MLAs with suspicion or make fun of them. The population of Bengaluru increased by about 40 lakhs in 15 years. There has been a huge jump in the population of Bengaluru in the last few decades. According to the 2011 census, the population of the city was approximately 84-85 lakh, which has now increased to more than 1.2 crore (estimated between 1.27 crore to 1.32 crore).
