Manchester City have been found guilty on 114 of 115 financial breach charges by Premier League. Sanctions pending, City plans to appeal.

Manchester City have reportedly been found guilty on 114 of the 115 charges of breaches of financial regulations in the Premier League. The sanctions are yet to be decided. According to The Athletic, City are expected to appeal the decision, and ‘all possibilities’ remain on the table.
In February 2023, the Premier League charged City with breaches, spanning from 2009 to 2018. The charges essentially accused the club of financial dishonesty regarding revenue and operating costs.
The allegations fall into four main categories. First, 54 charges involve failing to provide accurate financial information, allegedly by inflating sponsorship revenues tied to the club’s ownership.
Second, 14 charges center on obscuring true compensation paid to players and managers through hidden, off-the-books payments.
Third, 12 charges relate to breaching both UEFA and Premier League profitability and sustainability rules. Finally, 35 charges are for failing to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation.
City have denied all wrongdoing, arguing they possessed irrefutable evidence of their innocence.
Manchester City break silence on the update
A City spokesperson told The Athletic that the ‘process’ remained ongoing.
“The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality,” the spokesperson said. “As such, Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023. The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis that the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”
What can happen to Manchester City?
The potential penalties for such severe breaches include unlimited fines, massive points deductions, or outright expulsion from the league. Premier League clubs who have lost titles to City, and those who have been relegated in the concerned years, might be able to sue the club for damages.
It needs to be noted that the sanctions could take several months to be enforced, and the appeal process could itself take weeks to unfold.
