The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has reorganized the Censor Board i.e. Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The ministry has announced a new board consisting of 18 members. Many big faces from the cinema and TV industry have been included in this new team.

Among these, the names of actress Preity Zinta, actor Sunil Shetty, Pankaj Tripathi, TV actress Rupali Ganguly, Pallavi Joshi and veteran Bengali cinema actor Prosenjit Chatterjee are prominent. The new board will function under the Cinemagraph Act for a period of 3 years or until further orders.

Directors and musicians also got responsibility

Not only actors, but other personalities from the cinema and music world have been given a place in the 18-member board. These include three-time Grammy Award winning musician Ricky Cage, renowned directors Priyadarshan, Hansraj Hans and Neela Madhab Panda.

Apart from this, Manoj Joshi, Vinod Anupam, Abhishek Jain, Supriya Yarlagadda, Yatindra Mishra, Nishigandha Wad, Vaman Kendre and Ramesh Patange have also been made members of the board.

Board reconstitution took place for the first time since 2017

This reconstitution of the board of CBFC has taken place after a long gap. Earlier, the formal reconstitution of the Censor Board was done in August 2017.

Earlier this month, the Censor Board held its first meeting in 6 years. In that meeting, the board members had discussed in detail the issues related to certification of films, the functioning of revising committees and rules and regulations.

New team has been formed for a tenure of 3 years

Using the powers given under the Cinematograph Act, the Central Government has formed this new team. The new board will remain in office for the next 3 years or until further orders of the government. This team will work to issue certificates to films in Indian cinema keeping in mind the authenticity of the content, age-appropriate certification and their impact on society.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati will be the chairman of the censor board.

According to the order issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the command of the reorganized CBFC Board will be in the hands of Chairman Shashi Shekhar Vempati. Shashi Shekhar Vempati will take over the responsibility as the head of this statutory film certification body working under the ministry. The new board will oversee the functioning of the certification, content review and revising committees of films.

What is CBFC and its work?

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is a statutory body that works under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It is mandatory for any film shown in theaters and on television to obtain a certificate from this board. The board divides films into categories like ‘U’, ‘UA’, ‘A’ and ‘S’, which lets the audience know which age group the film is for.
