Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has formed a four-member fact-finding committee to investigate an incident at one of its school hostel messes following allegations that a chameleon was found in a student’s bowl of pulses.
The university said it has sought assistance from government investigating agencies to examine the CCTV footage related to the incident and establish what happened.
According to JMI, the footage appears to show a hostel resident carrying his bowl of pulses to a spot underneath a mess table. A group of students subsequently raised an alarm, claiming that a chameleon had been found in the food.
The university said the committee will examine the complete CCTV footage and establish the sequence of events leading up to the incident. It will also look into the actions of the students involved and determine whether there was any deliberate attempt to create disruption or damage the reputation of the university’s hostel messes.
JMI said action would be taken under applicable rules if the inquiry establishes deliberate wrongdoing, fabrication of claims, circulation of misinformation or any other misconduct.
The university has also sought to underline its existing food safety and hygiene arrangements. It said the quality of food served in its hostel messes is regularly monitored by hostel provosts, wardens and caretakers, along with mess committees comprising students residing in the hostels.
JMI added that senior officials, including the Vice Chancellor and Registrar, occasionally dine at both boys’ and girls’ hostel messes as part of efforts to monitor the quality of food being served.
The university also highlighted the comparatively low cost of its hostel messes in relation to other universities in the Delhi-NCR region, saying it continues to take steps to maintain food quality and hygiene.
As part of measures to strengthen monitoring, JMI has decided to install additional CCTV cameras in all hostel messes and their kitchens. The university said the cameras will allow round-the-clock monitoring of food preparation, catering and other activities taking place in these areas.
The administration has also raised concerns over the circulation of videos, reels and other social media material relating to the incident. It said unverified allegations and misinformation could disrupt the functioning of the hostels and affect the wider academic environment.
JMI said individuals found deliberately circulating misinformation or making allegations without factual and verifiable evidence could face action under existing university rules.
The university has appealed to students not to share unverified videos or other material that could adversely affect the reputation of the institution, which has been in existence for more than 105 years.
At the same time, JMI said students’ genuine complaints about food quality, hygiene or hostel facilities would be taken up on priority.
The university said its focus remains on maintaining a safe and supportive environment for students while ensuring that hostel facilities meet appropriate standards and students’ academic interests are protected.
