EPFO WhatsApp Service: Managing your employees’ provident fund (EPF) account could soon become easier, with the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) working on a WhatsApp-based service for members. The initiative is aimed at allowing EPFO members to access basic account-related information and seek assistance through WhatsApp, reducing the need to depend on the EPFO website, call centres or physical visits to regional offices.
Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had announced in May that EPFO was planning to introduce WhatsApp-based chatbot services for member communication and basic account-related requests. Under the proposed system, members would be able to start a conversation by sending ‘Hello’ to EPFO’s verified WhatsApp number.
What services will EPFO offer on WhatsApp?
The planned WhatsApp-based system is expected to provide access to several routine EPF-related services and information.
These include:
- PF balance: Members will be able to check their EPF balance.
- Recent transactions: The service is expected to provide details of the last five PF transactions.
- Claim status: Members will be able to track the status of their EPF claims.
- KYC-related assistance: Members can seek help with KYC-related issues.
- Interest credit information: The proposed chatbot is expected to provide information related to interest credited to the EPF account.
- UAN-related assistance: Members can get help with queries related to their Universal Account Number.
- Grievance and query support: Routine EPFO queries can be raised through the platform.
- Pending action alerts: EPFO may also use WhatsApp to alert members about actions that need to be completed.

How will the EPFO WhatsApp service work?
Step 1: Send ‘Hello’
A member will initiate the conversation by sending “Hello” to EPFO’s official, verified WhatsApp account.
Step 2: Mobile number verification
EPFO will verify whether the WhatsApp message is coming from the mobile number registered with the member’s UAN.
Step 3: Select the required service
Once verified, members will be presented with menu options. The system is expected to support regional languages, making it easier for members to navigate the service.
Step 4: Get the information
Depending on the request, the chatbot will either provide an automated response or retrieve the relevant information from EPFO’s database.
The idea is to make routine EPFO interactions more accessible without requiring members to repeatedly log in to the portal or contact a call centre.
Is the EPFO WhatsApp service already available?
This is where members need to be careful. EPFO has announced and been working on a WhatsApp-based chatbot service, but this should not be confused with the regional WhatsApp helplines that EPFO offices already operate for grievances and queries.
For example, EPFO’s Goa regional office announced an updated WhatsApp helpline in July 2026 for members, pensioners and employers to submit grievances, seek information and request service assistance.
Therefore, members should not assume that every WhatsApp number claiming to offer EPFO services is an official account.
What should you do if you receive an EPFO WhatsApp message?
The biggest concern is the risk of fraud. EPFO has repeatedly warned members not to share sensitive information, such as UAN password, Aadhaar details, PAN details, bank account details, OTP, and other personal or financial information, with anyone claiming to represent EPFO through WhatsApp, calls, messages or social media. EPFO’s own warning says its officials do not ask members for such information through these channels.
Members should therefore verify the official EPFO account and verification badge before interacting with a WhatsApp service.
Existing ways to check PF balance
Until the WhatsApp chatbot becomes available for the relevant service, EPFO members can continue to use existing channels. EPFO’s official member services currently provide access to the EPF passbook and claim status. Members can also check their PF balance through the existing missed-call and SMS facilities.
For example, EPFO says members can give a missed call to 9966044425 from their registered mobile number for PF balance information. The organisation also provides an SMS facility by sending ‘EPFOHO UAN
Quick Answers
The planned EPFO WhatsApp chatbot will allow members to check their PF balance, view details of their last five transactions, and track claim status. It will also provide KYC-related assistance, information on credited interest, UAN-related help, routine query support, and alerts for pending actions. Additionally, the AI-powered chatbot will operate 24/7 to assist with profile updates, name or birthdate corrections, and pending PMVBRY cases.
