The world of ‘Mirzapur’ is famous for its characters, violence and powerful dialogues as well as memes. Be it the old memes of the web series or the new character of the film Birju Lohar and his painful scenes, ‘Mirzapur’ is a rage on social media. Rasika Duggal, who played the role of Beena Tripathi in the film, and Mohit Malik, who played the role of Birju Lohar, in a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, talked about viral memes, funny memes made on their characters and the reaction of social media. Rasika narrated the story of her oldest and favorite ‘Mirzapur’ meme, while Mohit described the memes based on Birju’s pain as ‘relatable’. Question: The relationship between ‘Mirzapur’ and memes is old. How did you feel when you saw memes being made on your characters for the first time? Answer/Rasika Duggal: It has been a very special experience for me. The meme that became most popular is from 2018 and was my first shot in ‘Mirzapur’. We were shooting that scene that day. I get up from the bed and say the line – ‘Every time we heat it and leave it cold.’ When I saw that shot on the monitor the hair on one side of me literally stood up. I told Guru that I know the scene should look a bit messy, but it looks more awkward. It seems as if something has grown on the head. He said that it is only a two-three second shot, it will not last long. I said ok. Later the same shot became a meme. At that time I did not think at all that this would happen. During that period, along with ‘Mirzapur’, meme culture was also growing rapidly. I think it’s a great thing if an actor’s work becomes a part of popular culture. Question: If Beena had said the same line to Birju – ‘Every time we heat it and leave it cold’, then what would have been Birju’s reaction? Answer/Mohit Malik: This cannot happen. Rasika Duggal: Because this is not our relationship. That line is about the relationship between Akhanda and Beena. This cannot happen at all in the relationship between Birju and Beena. Mohit Malik: Love is of a different kind here. This is love like devotion. That line does not fit into the relationship between Birju and Bina. Question: ‘We did it out of compulsion, now we are enjoying it’ meme also went viral. What would you like to say about this? Answer/Rasika Duggal: This is my favourite. I love this meme. Question: If you have to speak this line in Tripathi’s style, how will you speak it? Answer/Rasika Duggal: In the style of Beena, I would say – ‘We did it out of compulsion, now I have started enjoying it.’ Question: Kaleen bhaiya talks about ‘control’ all his life. Has Beena ever controlled Kaalin Bhaiya? Answer/ Rasika Duggal: Very much. Kaleen Bhaiya is completely under Binaa’s control. who is not? If we say in today’s Gen-Z language, then Kaalin Bhaiya becomes ‘Puki’ in front of Bina. ‘Puki’ means a person who is very powerful and domineering from outside, but becomes very soft and a little timid in front of a special person. The whole world is afraid of Kaalin Bhaiya, but Kaalin Bhaiya is afraid of Bina. Mohit Malik: This is the beauty of the character of Kaalin Bhaiya. This is clearly visible in the way he has played this character. Rasika Duggal: Outside he is Kaalin Bhaiya, but inside the house he is Beena’s husband. There the whole equation changes. Question: Who has the most ‘Jalwa’ in ‘Mirzapur’? Answer/ Mohit Malik: Munna’s. This is his line and I think ‘Jalwa’ should become his trademark now. Rasika Duggal: But I would say it belongs to the Tripathis. It belongs to Bina and also to Akhanda. Question: A lot of memes are being made on social media on the character of Birju Lohar. Did you imagine that this character would go viral like this? Answer / Mohit Malik: No, not at all. The effort was complete. I knew that my screen time was very less among such big characters and actors. That’s why it was important that whenever I come on screen, Birju’s five-year journey should be visible. I think the audience connects with emotions quickly. I worked hard, gave my life. But in the end it is a game of the moment, whatever things go right at that time, it becomes a moment. Same thing happened in the film also. Like someone threads a garland, all the moments got connected to each other and a beautiful garland was formed. Maybe that’s why people liked Birju’s character so much. Question: How did you feel seeing the memes made on Birju’s pain and last scene? Answer/ Mohit Malik: I think people find these memes so relatable because everyone has had their heart broken at some point. Everyone is a heartthrob of some kind. I saw a meme which depicted what happened to Birju in a funny way. That went quite viral. I thought people captured that pain in their own way. Because this was not just Birju’s story anymore. People saw their pain in him. Question: The line from the scene of Beena and Birju, ‘Love is there, lifetime is short’ became a part of meme and poetry. Did you have any idea on the set that this line would get so big? Answer/ Rasika Duggal: No, not at all. At that time we were only thinking that our performance should be good and the scene should be shot properly. During the shooting itself, people on the set started joking using this line in different ways. Someone used to say – ‘Love is all there is, life time is short.’ Then people used to say even on small things that if the scene gets spoiled then it is just a scene, lifetime is short. At that time it had become a meme on the set, but we did not think that later it would become a meme on the internet. Question: After seeing the memes of your characters on social media, did you ever think that they became more viral than expected? Answer/ Rasika Duggal: At that time our focus was only on work. We were thinking that the performance should come in the right way. Later, when people started using those scenes in their own way, it felt great. I think what could be better for an actor than his character becoming a part of people’s everyday conversations and popular culture. Question: On one hand there are serious and intense characters in ‘Mirzapur’, on the other hand their memes are made. Which meme did you find funniest about your character? Answer/Rasika Duggal: This time two-three things were very funny. There was a meme in which someone called it a ‘killer performance’. I liked the second one, in which people had added their own poetry before ‘Love hi toh hai, lifetime thodi rahta hai’. I felt that we should organize a regular poetry competition, in which people have to write such a poem which ends with this line – ‘Love is there, lifetime is short.’ One person recreated the entire scene and added twists upon twists. He also changed the ending of our scene in his own way. It is a lot of fun seeing such memes and reels. Question: ‘Why did you kill Birju?’ on social media This question is being discussed a lot. Memes are being made on this also. Did you see? Answer / Mohit Malik: Yes, this is also going on a lot. People are asking why Birju was killed? Rasika Duggal: Someone linked it to the Kattappa question from ‘Baahubali’. Someone had sent me a meme in which it was written that the two biggest mysteries of Indian cinema are – why did Baahubali kill Kattappa and why did he kill Birju? Mohit Malik: People have caught it in their own way too. This is the specialty of social media that it creates its own world with just one scene.
