When you leave the job, your old company has to enter your exit date on the EPFO portal. If this date is not recorded or is entered incorrectly, the PF transfer may get stuck with the new employer.

Apart from this, questions may arise regarding the dates of your employment in the new company during background verification i.e. BGV.

The good thing is that employees don’t always have to depend on their old company to correct this mistake.

Employees Provident Fund Organization provides online facility to update the exit date yourself on its UAN-linked member portal.

Know the important conditions before updating

  • 2 months difference: As per EPFO rules, you can enter or update exit date online only after completion of 2 months of leaving the job.
  • Last PF Contribution: The exit date you enter should be the same month in which the former employer deposited your last PF contribution.
  • Aadhaar Linked UAN: Your UAN must be active and it must be linked to Aadhaar. Also, the mobile number registered in Aadhaar should be available with you so that OTP verification can be done.
  • Checking Records: If the company has already recorded a date, do not change any date without checking. Before making changes, make sure to match your salary slip, relieving letter and official service records.

What to do if there is no change online?

  • If due to some technical reason the portal does not allow you to update your exit date online, you will have to contact your old employer.
  • If the company does not hear from you for several days or weeks or refuses to help, you can lodge your complaint on the complaint portal of EPFO.

What harm can happen from wrong exit date?

The exit date recorded in EPFO records is a very important part of your employment and service records.

PF Transfer and Withdrawal: It is mandatory to have the correct exit date to transfer the old PF balance to the new account when you join a new job. This also makes it easier to withdraw PF money later.

Problem of Overlapping and BGV: If your exit date is incorrect or not recorded on the portal, your old and new job dates may appear to be overlapping i.e. working in two places at the same time.

This may raise serious questions during Background Verification (BGV) in the new company and may delay or hinder your joining.

EPFO members should take care of safety

EPFO cautions its members to use only the official EPFO member portal for this purpose.

Do not share your UAN password, Aadhaar, PAN or bank account information with anyone calling you posing as a representative of a retirement fund institution.
