Days after the deadly Satya Niketan building collapse that killed 7 students, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), in its survey, has identified 62 buildings as “dangerous” across the national capital.

Among these, civic authorities have already acted against 20 structures, demolishing 16 and sealing four. The remaining 42 buildings are now slated for demolition or sealing on priority, according to the survey report accessed exclusively by News18 India.

The report was once again circulated among the concerned MCD departments on September 7, shortly after the Satya Niketan collapse, to expedite action against structures considered unsafe.

42 Dangerous Buildings Await Action

The survey classifies 62 structures as dangerous based on information compiled from different MCD zones. Of these, 50 fall under the maintenance category, while 12 have been listed under the building category.

The report also records instances where dangerous buildings were evacuated and repairs undertaken. However, 42 of the structures identified in the survey still require further action, including demolition or sealing.

The renewed circulation of the survey comes after a five-storey building housing a boys’ PG in Satya Niketan, near Delhi University’s South Campus, collapsed around 1.30 pm on Sunday while repair work was underway.

Seven people were killed and five injured after the structure came crashing down, with rescue operations continuing for around 27 hours.

MCD Surveys Buildings Before Monsoon

The civic body carries out building safety surveys every year ahead of the monsoon season. This year, it set a target of surveying 32.55 lakh houses across Delhi.

According to the survey report, more than 30.74 lakh houses have already been inspected, covering 97.12% of the target.

The exercise also identified 377 houses that required repairs. So far, repairs have been completed in 27 of these houses, while the remaining cases continue to be monitored.

Satya Niketan Collapse Puts MCD Under Scrutiny

The latest action comes amid questions over the safety of ageing and unauthorised structures in the city following the Satya Niketan building collapse.

According to an MCD statement, the collapsed building had been constructed in the 1990s on a plot measuring around 55 square yards in a resettlement colony. The structure comprised a basement and ground floor with four upper floors.

Some local residents, however, claimed that the building was nearly five decades old and dated back to the 1970s.

Officials said permission in such resettlement colonies had originally been granted only for ground-plus-one structures. The decades-old G+4 building was being used as a boys’ hostel, according to officials.

The civic body said the structure had neither a sanctioned building plan nor any complaint registered against it.

Locals have attributed the collapse to ongoing repair work and water accumulation in the basementthough the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

The Delhi Police has arrested the building’s owner from Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi, while the MCD has suspended South Zone Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar and four engineers pending disciplinary proceedings.

Multiple Incidents Of Building Collapse In Delhi

The Satya Niketan incident is among several fatal building and fire incidents reported in Delhi this year. A building collapse in Saidulajab on May 30 killed six people, while a fire at a bed-and-breakfast establishment in Hauz Rani on June 3 claimed 23 lives, including 11 foreign nationals.

A house also collapsed in Malka Ganj’s Sabzi Mandi area in June, followed by the collapse of a four-storey building in Karawal Nagar later that month.

With 42 buildings now awaiting demolition or sealing, the MCD’s latest survey has brought the question of how quickly the civic body acts on structures identified as dangerous back into focus.
