India is going to host the BRICS summit on 12-13 September. Leaders of many countries will reach Delhi for the summit. But there is still suspense over the arrival of Prime Minister Tariq Rahman of neighboring country Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is not a member of BRICS. Despite this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Tariq Rehman to attend the outreach session of the summit as a special guest.
However, the issue of Sheikh Hasina remains a major hurdle in the relations between the two countries. India had also invited Tariq Rehman for a bilateral visit.
In response, Dhaka set a condition that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, living in India, should first be sent back.
Tariq’s visit to India in August was postponed
Earlier, Prime Minister Tariq Rehman was scheduled to visit India in the third week of August. But Dhaka’s condition was that India should send back Sheikh Hasina. Only after this will the preparations for PM’s visit to India proceed further.
According to Bangladeshi officials, there were some good signals from India on this issue. But Dhaka wanted India’s stand to be more clear.
On this, India had said that it is reviewing Bangladesh’s request under the legal process. For this reason Rehman’s trip was postponed.
Dhaka tribunal gives death sentence to Hasina
Sheikh Hasina came to India after the student movement in August 2024. He has been sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Dhaka for inciting and ordering the murder.
In the remaining cases he has been sentenced to life imprisonment. ICT had made him an accused in 5 cases. The tribunal had described Sheikh Hasina as the mastermind of the murders that took place during the student movement.
Sheikh Hasina left the country on 5 August 2024. She has not been seen since then. This footage is from before he boarded the helicopter.
Tension increased after Hasina’s press conference in Delhi
Actually, on August 5, Sheikh Hasina held a virtual press conference in Delhi. In this, he answered the questions of journalists on the second anniversary of the removal of the Awami League government from power and also expressed his views on the politics of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh government expressed strong objection to this. Dhaka said that Hasina’s public political statement while in India could harm efforts to normalize relations between the two countries.
Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said that India was earlier warned about this but still India allowed them to hold this press conference. It is noteworthy that India had refused to stop Sheikh Hasina’s press conference.
India had said that their program was being organized by a private media organization. The government has nothing to do with this.
Bangladesh closer to Pakistan-Turkey amid tension with India
Amidst the tension with India over Hasina issue, Bangladesh is also emphasizing on other options in its foreign policy. Dhaka is trying to strengthen strategic and defense relations with Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. This is also being seen as a sign of the changing foreign policy of Bangladesh after Hasina.
Bangladesh has also shown official interest in joining the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement. This is a new mutual defense agreement made between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said in Parliament that if Bangladesh gets an invitation to join this agreement, it will look at it positively. He called it a step related to self-defense of Muslim countries.

PM Rahman’s party against his visit to India
- There is also political opposition in Bangladesh regarding Tariq Rahman’s visit to India. Leaders of ruling party BNP have raised questions on Sheikh Hasina’s political activities in India.
- The leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP), which was formed in the movement in 2024, said – Tariq Rehman should not go to India until a decision is taken on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition and India-Bangladesh relations.
- NCP said Hasina’s press conference in New Delhi took place with the direct or indirect support of the Government of India. Hasina’s statement from Delhi cannot be considered merely her personal opinion. This also gives an indication of India’s stance.
What is BRICS?
BRICS is a group of 11 major emerging economies. These include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.
Its objective is to promote economic, political and social cooperation between these countries. Initially there were 4 countries, which were called BRIC. The name was coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill in 2001.
India is chairing the BRICS summit in 2026. The 18th BRICS summit is going to be held in New Delhi on 12-13 September.
