The Giridih legislator, who also held charge of crucial ministries like Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, died following a sudden illness.

Jharkhand Higher and Technical Education Minister and senior Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Sudivya Kumar Sonu passed away late Saturday night due to cardiac arrest. He was 56.

The two-term Giridih MLA had complained of discomfort at his residence before being rushed to a private hospital in Giridih, where he died during treatment.

Kumar also held charge of crucial ministries like Urban Development, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs in the Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government.

The JMM expressed grief over the sudden demise of its senior leader and said, “The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha family is stunned and heart-broken by the untimely demise of Sudivya Kumar, a dedicated comrade of JMM and a Minister in Jharkhand government.”

“His departure is an irreplaceable loss for the party, the government, and Jharkhand. His struggles, service, and contributions will always be remembered. May God grant peace to the departed soul and provide strength to the bereaved family and all comrades in this difficult time,” it added.

JMM leader and state transport minister Deepak Birua also expressed shock and grief and said in an X post, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of my colleague and fellow minister in the Jharkhand government, Sudivya Sonu ji. His health suddenly deteriorated last night, and he passed away while undergoing treatment at the hospital. May God grant peace to his soul and give his family the strength to bear this grief. This is a huge loss for the JMM family. A tearful final ‘Johar’, brother.”
