Iran has claimed that its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) fired several ballistic missiles at a US aircraft carrier and a US Navy destroyer, escalating the latest confrontation between Tehran and Washington in waters around Iran.
According to a report by Al Jazeera, the IRGC said the two American warships were targeted because they were “harassing Iranian ships and participating in a naval blockade”.
The Iranian force claimed that the missile attack inflicted damage on the vessels and that both warships subsequently left the area.
Tasnim news agency, as cited by Al Jazeera, reported the IRGC’s claim that the two vessels, “after sustaining damage and fearing further attacks, were forced to flee the conflict zone”.
The Iranian claim came amid an exchange of attacks involving military and commercial vessels in the region, following US strikes on Iranian oil tankers.
IRGC Warns Of Stronger Response
The IRGC also pointed to an earlier warning from US Central Command commander Admiral Brad Cooper, who had said, “If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost – taking out three of yours.”
The statement was cited by the IRGC as part of its justification for warning that any continuation of US military action against Iranian shipping could trigger a more forceful response.
“If the United States continues its hostile and aggressive actions, the US regime should expect a significant response from the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran. We are stronger than ever,” the IRGC said, according to Al Jazeera.
Iran Targets Vessels After US Strikes
The latest Iranian claims followed US strikes against three Iranian oil tankers. The US military said its forces had attacked the vessels after American Navy ships came under ballistic-missile fire.
Reuters reported that Iran subsequently said it had targeted three tankers travelling on what it described as unauthorised routes through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as three other vessels it alleged were affiliated with the United States.
The Iranian military has also warned that attacks against US military vessels would become more severe if Washington continued interfering with Iranian shipping.
US Says Ships Evaded Iranian Attacks
The US military, meanwhile, said an American aircraft carrier and destroyer had evaded multiple Iranian attacks while operating in the region. The Associated Press reported that US officials said no American personnel were injured in the exchange.
The US subsequently said three Iranian oil carriers had been disabled or destroyed.
Admiral Cooper warned that Washington would defend American forces and, if necessary, target Iran’s exposed oil fleet.
