PM Modi reached Kyrgyzstan on Sunday night.

The 26th SCO summit will be held in Bishkek from August 31 to September 1. This summit will be hosted by Kyrgyzstan and chaired by Sadir Japarov. This is a conference organized on the completion of 25 years of SCO.

The theme this time is – Moving forward together for sustainable peace, development and prosperity. Leaders of 10 member countries including India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran will participate in this summit. PM Modi will represent India.

Modi left for Kyrgyzstan on Sunday evening to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit after completing his two-day visit to Uzbekistan.

India and Pakistan became full members in 2017. Then Iran joined in 2023 and Belarus in 2024. During the summit, Modi will also meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Modi will also attend the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games to be held in Bishkek.

Know in 4 points why SCO summit is important for India…

  1. Mineral reserves: India has been trying to strengthen its relations with the countries of Central Asia for a long time. Central Asia has large reserves of oil, gas, uranium and other important minerals.
  2. Energy Need: India wants to increase cooperation with countries in the region to meet its energy needs.
  3. New Business Routes: India also wants to increase trade with the countries of Central Asia. For this, he is working on developing new trade and transportation routes.
  4. Campaign against terrorism: India is also increasing cooperation with these countries on issues like situation in Afghanistan and terrorism.

What is Shanghai Co-operation Summit (SCO)…

Shanghai Co-operation Summit was established on 15 June 2001 in Shanghai city of China. Initially it had 6 member countries – China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Today SCO is among the largest regional organizations in the world, with 10 full member countries. Its main objectives are to increase security, counter-terrorism, economic cooperation, connectivity and cultural cooperation.

Pakistan may get hosting next year

This is a historic conference organized on the completion of 25 years of SCO. This is considered to be the most important multilateral conference of the year in terms of security, trade and strategic balance of Eurasia. Kyrgyzstan’s presidency will end after the summit and the presidency for 2026–27 is expected to be handed over to Pakistan. The 2027 SCO summit is proposed in Pakistan.

The Tianjin Declaration of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) said – “Member States strongly condemned the terrorist attack that took place in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025. They expressed their deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of the dead and injured. They also said that the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of such attacks should be brought to justice.”
