An eight-year-old boy died after being run over by a car in Mumbai’s Bandra area on Sunday afternoon. The accused driver has been identified as Meghna Rawal, a gym trainer. Rawal has been taken into police custody.
The incident reportedly occurred between 3:30 pm and 4 pm. According to an eyewitness who helped take the child to the hospital, the boy was standing by the side of the road and was not crossing it when the car ran over him. The eyewitness alleged that the driver did not stop immediately after running him over and continued speaking on the phone.
Eyewitness Claims Driver Failed To Stop The Car
The witness added that two people intervened and pulled the child out from under the car before he was taken to hospital in the same vehicle.
“After the accused ran over the child, she didn’t stop; she was talking on a call continuously. Two people stopped her and rescued the child from under her car. We took the child in the lady’s car to the hospital to admit him. The child was at the side of the road and wasn’t crossing it either…I am speaking on the basis of humanity; I helped the child as I was present there,” the eyewitness said.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The incident comes amid a series of road-safety concerns in Mumbai and its suburbs. Earlier this month, a fitness trainer was allegedly assaulted in a road-rage incident near Bandra Talao. Police had booked three men in connection with the assault.
In another recent case, a 16-year-old allegedly driving a car in Nalasopara ran over two women pedestrians, killing one and seriously injuring the other. The minor, along with the vehicle owner and registered driver, was arrested.
Police are now investigating the Bandra crash and determining the circumstances that led to the child being run over.
