If you are studying or planning to pursue a BSc Nursing or BPharma degree in Bihar, this news may come as a shock. The recently declared results have dealt a major blow to thousands of students across the state. The results of several private colleges affiliated with the Bihar University of Health Sciences (BUHS) have been extremely poor, with a large number of students receiving “zero” marks on their mark sheets.

After seeing the BPharma results, students’ anger has reached a boiling point. Protests have erupted in several districts, including Patna, Samastipur, Jehanabad, and Rohtas. Students allege that they attempted all the questions in their answer sheets, yet received extremely low marks such as 0, 3, 4, or 5. So, where does the problem lie, and what does the university administration have to say?

Students furious after seeing ‘zero’ marks

As soon as the results were announced, students were left deeply disappointed. In several colleges, between 50 and 80–90 per cent of students were declared unsuccessful. Angry students say they studied throughout the year and appeared for the examinations properly. Despite this, many were awarded zero marks on their mark sheets. Frustrated by the results, thousands of students took to the streets, demanding a fair re-evaluation of their answer sheets.

Claims of ‘setting’ during admissions

Another serious issue has emerged amid the controversy. Some private institutions allegedly assured students at the time of admission that “the exam and centre would be managed.” However, this time, the university administration reportedly tightened the examination and evaluation process significantly, reported News18 Hindi. With stricter checking and evaluation in place, students who had relied on such assurances and alleged “setting” were reportedly exposed and failed.

Several private nursing and pharmacy colleges are allegedly providing education largely on paper, without adequate academic support. Due to a lack of qualified teachers, students may not receive proper guidance or preparation. As a result, when exams are conducted fairly and rigorously, they may struggle to produce correct answers.

Amid the growing protests, the university administration, including the BUHS Controller of Examinations, has maintained a firm stance. He said that he has no connection with practices that may have taken place in the past. According to the administration, examinations and answer-sheet evaluations are now being conducted with greater transparency and strictness.

Students who have doubts about their marks can apply for re-checking and scrutiny through the prescribed government procedure. For now, this provision offers some relief to students seeking a review of their results.

The controversy has also raised serious questions about the quality and standards of medical and paramedical education in Bihar.
