At least 160 people have been reported killed after devastating flash floods and landslides swept through parts of Nepal and China’s Tibet region on Wednesday. The disaster destroyed bridges, damaged homes and disrupted several hydropower projects, while hundreds remain missing.
The flash flood surged through the Bhote Koshi River after a sudden rise in water levels near the Nepal-Tibet border. Nepal officials said the flooding was reported shortly after an earthquake struck the Tibet region, raising the possibility that a glacial outburst may have triggered the disaster.
The floods spread from Rasuwa and Dhading to several other districts, including Nuwakot, Chitwan and Nawalparasi East. Rescue teams have been deployed as authorities continue to search for those missing.
Nepal Recovers 157 Bodies, China Reports 3 Dead
Nepal Police said 157 bodies had been recovered from the flood-hit areas, while the Nepal government put the number of missing people at around 500.
On the Chinese side, state-run CGTN reported three deaths and 265 people missing after a mudslide struck a Tibet border hub.
The disaster has also damaged eight operational hydropower projects with a combined capacity of 354 MW, along with five projects under construction. Nineteen motorable bridges were also washed away, according to Nepalese authorities.
142 Indians Among Missing Foreigners
At least 341 foreign nationals are among those reported missing in Nepal, including 142 Indians, according to the Nepal Tourism Board. The missing Indians were travelling with three agencies — Samrat Tours & Travels, Leaf Holiday and Himalayan Glacier.
At least 50 Indians were pilgrims on the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra. Isha Foundation founder Sadhguru said 77 members of the organisation who were at an immigration centre remained unaccounted for, while 495 members had returned safely.
Several Indian states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh, have opened helplines for affected residents and their families. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has also issued emergency numbers and is coordinating with Nepalese authorities on rescue and relief efforts.
PM Modi Speaks With Balen Shah
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Nepal PM Balendra Shah and assured him of all possible humanitarian assistance. India has also sent an initial tranche of relief supplies to Nepal.
Shah later thanked PM Modi for his “warm words of solidarity” and offer of assistance, saying Nepal “profoundly value[s]” the enduring friendship between the two countries.
China has also stepped up rescue operations, with President Xi Jinping ordering an all-out effort to search for those missing and evacuate people at risk.
