The flood threat spilling over from Nepal into Bihar and Uttar Pradesh appears to have eased for now, with water levels in the Gandak River falling rapidly and the discharge at the Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage in the West Champaran district of Bihar dropping to around 81,000 cusecs.
The decline has brought relief to communities along the river in bordering areas of Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh, which were placed on high alert after a massive flash flood struck Nepal’s Himalayan region.

The latest easing comes as water from Nepal’s Trishuli River has flowed downstream through the Narayani River, reducing pressure on the Gandak system. The immediate concern of a sharp surge reaching Indian territory has therefore subsided, although authorities are expected to continue monitoring the river closely.

The alert had been triggered after a catastrophic flash flood hit Nepal near the border with Tibet on Wednesday. The disaster, believed to have been caused by an ice-and-rock avalanche or landslide, sent a massive surge of water and debris through parts of Nepal, destroying homes, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure. At least 157 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal, while hundreds remain missing.
The disaster also has a major Indian dimension. Several Indian nationals, including pilgrims and tourists, are among those reported missing. Nepal’s authorities have warned of continuing risks along rivers including the Trishuli and Narayani as rescue operations continue.
For Bihar and UP, however, the immediate flood danger appears to have receded as the Gandak’s flow falls. The development is significant because the Gandak originates in Nepal and carries water into the Indian plains, making sudden upstream flood events a concern for downstream districts.
For now, the Nepal disaster remains a major humanitarian emergency, but the immediate threat of its floodwaters causing a similar crisis across the border in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh appears to have eased. Authorities will nevertheless need to remain vigilant as conditions in the Himalayan catchment can change rapidly.
