Bharat Mandapam, one of the country’s biggest venues for international exhibitions, conventions and business events, could be in line for a significant redevelopment, with the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) commissioning a detailed study to assess how the complex can be expanded and utilised more efficiently.
The exercise will focus on a key question: how can Bharat Mandapam make better use of the space and development potential available to it?
The proposed study will assess the permissible Floor Area Ratio (FAR) of the site and examine how much of it can be effectively utilised as part of future development. Based on the assessment, the consultant will recommend what additional infrastructure and facilities should come up at the complex and what their capacities should be.
The study will not be limited to exhibition and convention facilities. ITPO plans to assess both the existing and future market demand for a wider mix of uses, including large exhibitions, conventions and conferences, hospitality, offices, commercial facilities and other compatible activities.
This demand assessment will form the basis for recommending an optimal land-use and facility mix for the site.
The redevelopment exercise is also expected to look at the way the entire Bharat Mandapam complex functions.
The consultant will prepare an integrated site planning and spatial development framework, including a proposed layout for new and upgraded infrastructure. It will examine existing connectivity, internal circulation, accessibility and movement within the site and suggest measures to improve the overall functioning of the complex.
This could include rethinking how visitors, exhibitors, delegates, service vehicles, and other users move through the site as the scale of activity increases.
The study will also prepare a conceptual planning framework for the proposed infrastructure and provide indicative technical specifications. This is expected to give ITPO a clearer roadmap for taking the redevelopment from the planning stage to eventual execution.
The proposed assignment is also designed to provide continuity between planning and execution.
Once ITPO takes up the actual redevelopment, the consultant will be expected to work with the architecture and engineering consultancy appointed for the project. It will provide handholding support and help translate the recommendations of the study into the final development.
The consultant will also be required to provide guidance and clarifications during implementation so that the approved redevelopment strategy and spatial planning framework are not diluted or altered without due consideration.

If implemented, the recommendations could reshape the footprint and functioning of Bharat Mandapam, with the potential for additional facilities and greater capacity for large-scale national and international events.
For ITPO, the exercise is essentially about planning Bharat Mandapam’s next phase—determining what the complex should look like, how much more it can accommodate and how its infrastructure can be made future-ready.
