Rahul Gandhi took to the streets for two consecutive days demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and cancellation of SIR. In 48 hours he spent more than 14 hours in protest.

On October 6, Rahul, Priyanka and opposition MPs staged a dharna for about 8 hours at Akashvani premises. During this, Rahul was seen eating food sitting on the ground under a tree. The police detained him twice.

On October 7, Rahul had lunch with opposition MPs and then left for Jantar Mantar by bus. When the police stopped the bus on the way, Rahul stood on the road. When he did not move, the police forcibly took him away and detained him. He was released after about two hours.

This was his biggest performance on the road after the end of Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2023. In between he has been participating in small demonstrations.

The year 2026 is when Rahul is most active in the last three years. In 2024, he took part in only one major demonstration. In 2025 also he took out a march with the opposition. Whereas this year, he has protested or participated in four major protests in 4 months against the treatment of students in the NEET paper issue and the protest against SIR.

6 October 2026: March from Parliament to Election Commission and 9-hour dharna

1. March from Parliament to Election Commission

Under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, opposition MPs of INDIA block set out on a march from Parliament towards the Election Commission office. The main issues were SIR, alleged irregularities in the voter list and demand for resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The opposition wanted the Election Commission to hear its complaints.

2. Police stopped the march by placing barricades

The march was stopped near NITI Aayog. Rahul Gandhi climbed the barricade and waved the tricolor. Many other opposition leaders were also stopped and detained by the police.

3. Rahul-Priyanka reached Akashvani Bhawan

After the march stopped, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi reached Akashvani Bhawan premises. Other opposition MPs also joined him there. They started protesting there demanding a meeting with the Election Commission.

4. The protest continued for about 9 hours

Rahul Gandhi spoke to the media during the protest and said that he stands to protect democracy. The opposition wanted a delegation of about 240 MPs to meet the Election Commission. But the ECI said no political party had formally requested a meeting till 4 pm. The Commission later said that the proposal for 240 MPs to meet in the Parliament complex was not in accordance with its prescribed protocol.

5. Police ended the protest at night, took him into custody

After about 8-9 hours the police vacated the Akashvani Bhavan premises. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and many opposition leaders were detained. According to Delhi Police, around 260 people, including 10 MPs, were detained. He was later released.

7 October 2026: Attempt to go to Jantar Mantar and then detention

1. The opposition continued the agitation the next day also

The opposition did not end the movement after 6 October. On October 7, MPs from INDIA block including Rahul Gandhi planned to protest at Jantar Mantar. The demands remained the same – questions on SIR, allegations related to voter list and demand for resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

2. After lunch, the MPs left for Jantar Mantar in buses.

It came to light that about 300 MPs had united. Lunch was also organized for the MPs by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. After this the opposition MPs left for Jantar Mantar in buses.

3. Police stopped buses even before Jantar Mantar

Delhi Police stopped the buses about 100 meters before Jantar Mantar. There was heavy police and RAF deployment. The protesters got down from the buses and started protesting on the road. Some Congress MPs even climbed on the roof of the buses.

4. Protest on the road, Rahul and Priyanka detained

There was a scuffle and tension between the police and the protesters. Priyanka Gandhi sat on the road. Many opposition MPs including Rahul Gandhi were detained by the police. During this, Rahul said that every FIR registered against him is like a “medal” for him and he will continue to demand the resignation of CEC.
