Al-Qaeda linked leader Harun Izhar gave a statement on Hindus in Chittagong, Bangladesh.
In Bangladesh, a controversial statement by Al-Qaeda associated leader Harun Izhar regarding Hindus has come to light. In a video viral on social media, he is seen saying that Hindus can be killed easily.
This video is of an event organized in Chittagong. In this, Ijhar is also heard saying that he will not need to do anything himself, because his supporters are enough to do so.
After Sheikh Hasina’s ouster from power, there have been many allegations of attacks and discrimination against Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh.

Who is Harun Izhar?
Harun Izhar is a radical Islamic leader from Chittagong, Bangladesh and has been associated with Hefazat-e-Islam. His father Mufti Izharul Islam was also a well-known Islamic leader and madrassa director of Chittagong.
Harun’s name has been appearing in cases related to radicalism and violent activities for a long time. In 2013, there was an explosion in the Madrasa located in Lalkhan Bazaar, Chittagong. Three people died in this incident.
During the investigation, the police had recovered explosive material, acid and unexploded grenades. In this matter, a case was registered against many people including Harun and his father.

What is the matter of connection with Al-Qaeda?
- The allegations regarding Harun Izhar’s links with Al-Qaeda and other jihadi networks are old.
- Bangladeshi media reports have linked his father’s madrasa to the network of banned organization Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami Bangladesh.
- It has also been claimed that his father had contacts with Osama bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omar.
- The reports describe Harun Izhar as a senior leader of the radical organization Hefazat-e-Islam and mention his alleged links with the international jihadi network.
Name came up in case of violence in 2021 also
March 2021: There was violence in Chittagong and other areas during the protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangladesh. Harun Izhar was arrested in cases related to these violent incidents.
According to the police, he admitted his role in the violence during interrogation and also revealed the names of those who allegedly played a role in instigating the violence. There were several cases registered against him in Dhaka, Chittagong and Rajshahi.

Violent protests took place in Dhaka in March 2021 against PM Modi’s visit. During this, the protesters blocked the road by setting fire to a tyre.
2023: Harun Izhar came out on bail from Chittagong Central Jail. According to the police, Izhar had got bail in 11 cases registered against him and the police had said that he would remain under surveillance.
2025: Harun Izhar’s name also came up during the violent anti-India protests in December. According to reports, he had reached a police station after a protest against Indian interests in Chittagong. There he was seen interfering in the case of those accused of attack on the Indian diplomatic mission.
Al-Qaeda is trying to create its terrorist cell in Bangladesh
The UNSC report released on August 10 said that Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) has now evolved into a regional terrorist network instead of a scattered small terrorist organization.
The organization has built up its own logistics and financial networks and now operates through small, individual cells rather than large groups.
It has been said in this report that AQIS is also trying to create its terrorist cell in Bangladesh. The report describes this as a matter of serious concern for regional security.
