Bangladesh has now said that the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and handover of those accused in killing of Osman Hadi remain key issues

Suspense continues over the proposed visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rehman to New Delhi, with Dhaka maintaining that certain conditions must be addressed before the visit can take place.
News18 had earlier reportedquoting sources, that Delhi and Dhaka are in talks for PM-level visit before BRICS summit. “India and Bangladesh are working to finalise an early bilateral visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to New Delhi — possibly before month-end, or in the first week of September, ahead of the BRICS Summit,” sources had said.
Bangladesh, however, has now said that the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the handover of those accused in the killing of Osman Hadi remain key issues between Dhaka and Delhi.
AKM Shahidul Karim said on Sunday that officials from Bangladesh and India have been in contact over the possibility of a bilateral visit. However, he said the process was affected by a press conference held by Sheikh Hasina. “We have made our position clear on the Hasina matter,” Karim said.
He said a “propitious environment” would need to be created for the proposed visit, adding that Bangladesh expects India to act on its request for Hasina’s extradition.
Karim also called for the handover of those accused in Hadi’s killing, saying Bangladesh expects India to comply with the countries’ extradition treaty. “We pursue Bangladesh-first policy,” he said, adding that Dhaka is currently awaiting a response from India.
The remarks indicate that uncertainty remains over the timing of Tariq Rehman’s proposed visit, with Bangladesh linking progress on the visit to its demands concerning Hasina and the Hadi case.
INDIA’S STANCE
Amid massive students’ protests, on August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina resigned from her 15-year tenure as Prime Minister and fled to India to take refuge. An interim government, and later an elected government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, took charge in Bangladesh. The new administration and Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal charged Hasina with mass killings and crimes against humanity, eventually sentencing her to death in absentia. Dhaka formally submitted a note verbale to India invoking their 2013 bilateral extradition treaty to bring her back for trial.
Sharif Osman Hadi was a 32-year-old prominent student activist and co-founder of the radical platform Inquilab Mancha. He was a frontline figure during the 2024 protests that toppled Hasina. On December 12, 2025, Hadi was shot at point-blank range by masked assailants on a motorcycle while traveling in an auto-rickshaw in Dhaka. He succumbed to his head injuries on December 18 at a hospital in Singapore.
Hadi’s death triggered mass violent protests and riots across Bangladesh. Suspects linked to the youth wing of Hasina’s Awami League party were named in the police charge sheet. Because the primary suspects allegedly fled across the border into India, some Bangladeshi political factions accused New Delhi of involvement or protection. This led to deep anti-India sentiments on the streets of Dhaka.
India maintains that Bangladesh’s request to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is being reviewed through established legal procedures, and the Sharif Osman Hadi murder case remains under ongoing investigation.
