Former Democratic Party MP Joe Manchin is among those politicians who believe more in maintaining their independent identity. Manchin, 78, will support independent candidates contesting for one house of the US Parliament – Congress. When he announced the formation of the council at a ceremony on July 23, several candidates, including California MP Kevin Kiley, were present. “We’re not creating another party,” Manchin says. We will support those who do not belong to any party and are independent. There have been very few efforts to create a third political force in America’s two-party politics. Therefore his initiative is important. Manchin has been a centrist throughout his political career. Before leaving the Democratic Party, he had defied the party line in Parliament on a number of issues, including climate change and taxes on the rich, between 2020-2024. Joe Manchin’s journey started from Farmington, a coal mining area in West Virginia. His father was the mayor of the city. His grandfather, a grocery shop operator, used to help the needy. Inspired by them, Manchin also started knowing the condition of the people and helping them. Due to this, local influence increased. At a student party at West Virginia University, he met Gail Connelly, who later became his wife. His start in politics was from the state assembly. In 2004, he became Governor of West Virginia and in 2010 reached the US Senate for the first time. He has been a supporter of the coal industry. With 50-50 members of Democrats and Republicans in the Senate in 2021-22, Joe Manchin’s vote became decisive. Under their pressure, President Joe Biden had to make changes in many bills. Manchin says there is no longer room for conservative leaders like him in the Democratic Party. They are campaigning against political polarization. According to Gallup, most Americans do not have a favorable opinion of both major parties, while 45% of people in one survey described themselves as independents. He was notable for winning the Senate twice from Republican-dominated West Virginia, although he lost the election in 2024.
