US President Donald Trump has warned that he is prepared to order “very strong military action” against Iran if ongoing diplomatic efforts fail, signalling that the military option remains on the table despite a temporary pause in planned strikes. The remarks were made during an interview with Axios on Sunday.
According to the report, Trump said he had decided to delay planned US military strikes to allow diplomacy another opportunity. The talks are focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route, and reviving negotiations over a broader nuclear agreement with Iran.
Trump said the decision to pause military action came after requests from countries involved in mediation efforts. Describing the move as a neutral step, he said, “Nothing gained, nothing lost.” However, he made it clear that Washington was prepared to respond with force if the negotiations failed.
