US-Iran War Latest News Updates Today Live: Fresh tensions erupted between the United States and Iran as Tehran targeted Washington’s regional allies and the US forces struck the perimeter of an Iranian nuclear plant. The renewed conflict coincided with the funeral ceremony of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
This was the second day in a row that the two sides exchanged fire, hours after US President Donald Trump announced that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iran was “over” and that he didn’t want a deal with the Iranians anymore.
Iranian state media said two military sites in two different cities came under target on Thursday evening, July 9. However, a US official told CNN that the country’s forces were not conducting strikes at the time.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials denied their involvement in the fresh escalations, saying they were “not familiar with any Israeli involvement in strikes in Iran right now.”
According to Iran’s IRNA news agency, citing Ehsan Jahanian, the political and security deputy governor of Bushehr province, a military facility near the city of Bushehr –– hosting the country’s nuclear power plant on the outskirts –– was hit by “US-Israeli enemy projectiles.”
However, it did not provide details on the extent of damage.
Ali Khamenei Laid To Rest
The fresh escalation coincided with the burial ceremony of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was laid to rest next to the Imam Reza shrine in the holy city of Mashhad, which was also his hometown.
His official ‘X’ account announced the “sacred body” of the late leader was laid to rest at the Dar al-Zikr section of the shrine. “The sacred body of the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei, was laid to rest in the early hours of Friday, 10 July 2026 (19 Tir 1405 in the Iranian calendar), at the Dar al-Zikr section of the holy shrine of Imam Reza (peace be upon him),” the post read.
Khamenei, 86, was killed in the coordinated US-Israeli strikes on February 28, the opening day of the West Asia conflict.
