On May 24, 2026, the then SHO Gurinderjit Singh Nagra held a press conference and claimed that the investigation had revealed that the murder was carried out due to family rivalry. According to the police, Charanjit Singh, a retired ASI living in America and brother-in-law of the deceased, gave contract to the shooters in a rivalry over his daughter’s divorce case.
Police claimed that during investigation and interrogation, information was found about transfer of Rs 1.80 lakh to the accounts of the shooters. After this, Charanjit Singh, his son Gurpreet Singh and daughter were also named in the murder case.
Then how did SHO Nagara come into controversy? From here the matter took a new turn. According to American agencies, an alleged demand of $4 lakh was made to Charanjit Singh and his family, who were made accused in the murder case, in the name of implicating them in the same case and providing relief. It is alleged that people associated with the network of gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gathered information about the family living in America and sent it to their contacts in India and then tried to demand money by putting pressure on this case.
US Attorney Bilal A. Esayli alleged that some Indian police officers also had a role in this entire incident. The name of the then SHO Gurinderjit Singh Nagra is also included in the allegations.
