In a bizarre incident, a loco pilot of the Indore-Mhow DEMU allegedly stopped the train to buy samosas from a shop beside the railway tracks.

A purported video has surfaced on social media platforms, showing the train halted near the Rangwasa Road area in Rau while the loco pilot steps out, purchases samosas from a nearby shop, returns to the engine and then resumes the journey.

However, News18 does not verify the authenticity of the video.

Railways Issues Clarification

After the incident went viral, the Western Railway issued a clarification saying the clip has been misrepresented and does not involve the Indore-Mhow DEMU passenger train as widely claimed.

According to the Railways, the incident involved a goods train (CGPT) that had been halted at the Rau Home Signal due to scheduled engineering work in the Rau yard. During the authorised operational stoppage, the Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) stepped out to purchase food. Officials said this personal act during a legitimate halt was wrongly portrayed on social media as the reason for stopping the train.

“The goods train was hauled at Rau Home Signal due to scheduled engineering work. It was not stopped to purchase food,” the Railways said, adding that the video had been falsely linked to a passenger DEMU service. The administration said selective editing and misrepresentation of the clip had created misinformation and urged the public to verify facts before sharing such content.

Earlier, Western Railway Public Relations Officer Mukesh Kumar said that the administration became aware of the incident through social media and has forwarded the video to senior officials for verification. He said the authenticity of the clip, the identity of the loco pilot, the train involved and the exact reason for the halt are yet to be established.

“At this point, I also cannot confirm why the train had stopped. I do not know the exact location or whether it had stopped because of a signal or for some other reason. Therefore, I have referred the matter to the concerned department for investigation, because the officers and employees of the concerned department know the locations, the routes, the train involved, the driver, and all those details,” he said as quoted by news agency PTI.

Kumar added that officials will determine whether the train had stopped due to an operational reason, such as a signal, or for any other legitimate purpose. He stressed that dismissal from service is a major disciplinary action and any punishment would depend on the findings of the inquiry.

“Dismissal from service is a very major punishment. It is not a matter of removing someone from service. However, if any fault is found, some form of punishment will be given,” he added.
