DA Hike July 2026: Even as central government employees await clarity on the implementation timeline of the 8th Pay Commission, attention has now shifted to the next Dearness Allowance (DA) revision due from July 2026.
The latest Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) data released by the Labour Bureau shows that the index rose to 150.8 in May 2026, up from 149.9 in April. Based on the available inflation data till May, the DA hike from July 2026 is currently expected to be around 3%, although the final figure will depend on the June index to be released this month.
According to reports, the 8th Pay Commission is expected to be implemented in late 2027. However, the new pay panel will become effective retrospectively from January 2026, with employees receiving 18-24 months of arrears.
Will the July 2026 DA hike be under the 7th Pay Commission?
As of now, the July 2026 dearness allowance is expected to be calculated and paid under the existing 7th Pay Commission. However, after the 8th Pay Commission gets approval to be implemented retrospectively, the arrears for any difference will be paid.
“Normally, when a new pay commission is implemented, the first DA instalment is reset to 0%. DA revisions start after six months, and employees later receive arrears for the gap between due and drawn DA. Therefore, no DA arrears would remain pending for the January-June 2026 period. However, from July 2026 onwards, any DA hike under the 7th CPC may translate into arrears once the 8th CPC is implemented,” an employee union source, who did not want to be named, has said.
In other words, if employees receive the July 2026 DA increase under the 7th Pay Commission and the 8th Pay Commission comes into effect later with revised pay scales, the government may pay the difference between the DA already drawn and the DA payable on the revised basic pay as arrears, subject to the final recommendations and government approval.
DA is revised twice every year — effective from January 1 and July 1 — based on the movement in the CPI-IW. Although the announcement is usually made a few months later, employees receive the revised amount with retrospective effect.
When will DA Hike July 2026 be announced?
DA hike for the July 2025 cycle will likely be announced in October nearly Diwali. If that is also, let’s say 3 per cent, the central government employees will likely receive the difference between the DA drawn and the DA due on higher basic pay once the 8th Pay Commission is implemented.
However, until the government announces the implementation date, fitment factor, pay matrix and DA transition formula, employees may have to wait for clarity.
How is the July DA calculated?
The July DA revision is based on the average CPI-IW data for the preceding 12 months. With the May 2026 index now available, only the June 2026 CPI-IW reading remains before the final DA calculation can be made.
Currently, available data suggests that employees may receive a DA hike of around 3%, but this estimate could change after the June inflation numbers are released.
The Centre had last approved a 2% DA hike, increasing dearness allowance from 58% to 60% of basic pay, effective from January 1, 2026. The decision, approved by the Union Cabinet on April 18, benefited over one crore central government employees and pensioners.
