Getting a passport in India will become expensive from July 1. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has increased the fees for different categories by making changes in the passport rules. The ministry has issued a gazette notification regarding the new rates after amendment in the Passport Rules, 1980. This increase has been made after 14 years. Earlier there was a change in fees in 2012.
According to the government notification, now applicants will have to pay Rs 1,000 more to get a passport in the normal category. The fee for 36 pages normal category passport has increased from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500. The fee for Tatkal service or category, which was earlier Rs 3,500, has now been reduced to Rs 5,000.
Rs 6,000 will have to be paid for immediate processing.
Additionally, those traveling frequently and want a 60-page passport booklet will have to pay Rs 3,500 for normal category and Rs 6,000 for tatkal processing.
Fee for making passport in normal category is ₹ 2,500
- Passport fee for 36 page normal category increased from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500.
- Passport fee in 36 page Tatkal category increased from Rs 3,500 to Rs 5,000.
- Passport fee for 60 page normal category increased from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,500.
- Passport fee in 60 page Tatkal category increased from Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000.
Highest charges will be levied for loss or damage of passport, new rates fixed
In this change, the biggest increase has been made in the replacement charge for passport if it is lost or damaged. If your 36-page passport is lost, then under normal processing you will have to pay Rs 5,000 to get it made again, whereas in Tatkal this expense will reach Rs 7,500.
Similarly, for replacement passport with 60 pages, the fee has been fixed at Rs 6,000 for normal category and Rs 8,500 for Tatkal.
Separate rules for replacement of minor children
Even in the case of minor applicants, if the passport containing 36 pages is lost or damaged, then Rs 4,250 will have to be spent in the normal category to get it replaced. At the same time, if any parent wants to get their child’s lost passport made as soon as possible through Tatkal service, then they will have to pay a fee of Rs 6,750.
There is no change in the validity of passport, rules will remain the same as before.
Along with increasing the fees, the government has also clarified the validity situation in the rules. The validity of passports issued for adult applicants will remain the same for a maximum of 10 years as before.
At the same time, the validity of passports issued to minors will remain valid for 5 years or till they complete 18 years of age (whichever is earlier). No changes have been made in this.
