The increasing demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) is driving competition for data centers across the world. In this series, British startup ‘Nscale’ is building a huge data center in Narvik, Norway. This project being built near the Arctic Circle will be one of the largest AI data centers in Europe. Location advantage: Narvik has a harsh winter, which will help keep the data center’s hot chips naturally cool. June-July is the hottest month here, even then the maximum temperature remains between 15 to 17 degrees Celsius. The average temperature in winter is around -4 to -6 degrees Celsius. Cheap electricity Norway has abundant and cheap energy available from hydropower. Electricity here is Rs 3-4. per unit, which is much lower than Europe. When fully operational, the center will consume 520 MW of electricity, which is more than the combined consumption of all existing data centers in Norway. Cost-Technology It will use Nvidia’s new ‘Vera Rubin’ processor. The total cost of the project is Rs 9.57 lakh crore. It is being estimated that 60-80% of the expenditure will be on chips. Usage: This center will be used by ‘Microsoft’ and ‘OpenAI’. By the end of the year it will be launched with more than 1 lakh advanced graphics processing units.
