Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday held summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during which he called for strengthening of comprehensive exchanges in areas such as diplomacy, law enforcement and the military.

Xi’s latest visit is particularly significant due to North Korea’s growing reliance on Russia for support linked to its nuclear programme and access to food, oil and military hardware.

Here are the outcomings of Monday’s meeting

  • China vows cooperation in areas like economics and trade, agriculture, health, construction, science and technology.
  • Kim Jong-un termed the North Korea-China relationship as the “most significant first strategic task of the state” and reaffirmed support for the “One China” principle.
  • Xi called on Kim to “oppose hegemony, authoritarianism and all attempts and conspiracies to revive militarism that endanger regional security and stability”.
  • This visit is significant not only because it is Xi’s first overseas trip this year, it also comes weeks after he hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump for separate visits in the Chinese capital, casting Beijing as a global power broker at a time of increased geopolitical tensions. Last time, Xi visited North Korea in 2019.
  • The Chinese President assured Kim that “no matter how the international situation changes, the firm position of the Chinese Party and government highly valuing the traditional friendship between China and North Korea will not change,” Xinhua reported.
