Alexander Zverev captured his first Grand Slam title on Sunday, defeating Flavio Cobolli in a gripping five-set final at the 2026 French Open. The German prevailed 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6(5)-7, 6-1 in an enthralling contest on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
With this triumph, Zverev became the first German man since Boris Becker to win a Grand Slam title since 1966, and the first from his country ever to claim the Roland Garros crown.
Zverev revealed that irrespective of how his career shapes up going forward, nobody can now deny him of the hard-fought major crown.
Zverev produced a complete performance to finally secure his maiden Major crown against the young Italian.
“Now no matter what happens, I will always be a Grand Slam Champion. Nobody can take that away from me.”
“Maybe that does give me some freedom. Maybe my mind will just be a little bit calmer when I play a final. Meaning that even if I lose it, I’ll still be a grand slam champion.”
Cobolli began his Paris campaign with a straight-sets victory over compatriot Andrea Pelligrino, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3, and then swept past China’s Yinbing Wu 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. He next routed American Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, before overcoming Zachary Svadja 6-2, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 to reach the quarterfinals. There, Cobolli defeated Canadian Felix Auger Aliassame 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. He advanced to the final after compatriot Matteo Arnaldi withdrew ahead of their scheduled semifinal clash.
Zverev, meanwhile, opened his tournament in commanding fashion, dismissing Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, then easing past Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. In the third round, he beat Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, before overcoming Dutchman Jesper de Jong 7-6, 6-4, 6-1 to secure a place in the quarterfinals. Zverev then defeated Spaniard Rafael Jodar 7-6, 6-1, 6-3 to move into the semifinals, where he got past Jakub Mensik 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the title match.
In the final, Zverev struck first, taking the opening set to seize control. Cobolli responded by claiming the second set to level the contest. Zverev edged the third set, only for Cobolli to push the match into a decider by winning the fourth set in a tie-break. In the fifth, Zverev produced a dominant display to close out the match and finally lift his first Grand Slam trophy.
