Ram Charan and Jhanvi Kapoor starrer film ‘Peddi’ is surrounded in controversies these days. There is a debate going on on social media regarding Jhanvi Kapoor’s character and her presentation in the film. Many people allege that the female character in the film has been excessively glamorized and objectified. Now actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has reacted to this controversy.
Speaking to PTI, Kangana said that sometimes filmmakers and directors do not understand that they are objectifying women. However, he said that if an artiste feels that something like this is happening to him, then he should express his views openly.
These days Kangana is busy in the promotion of her upcoming film ‘Bharat Bhagya Vidhaata’. Meanwhile, while talking to PTI, he was asked a question on the ‘Peddi’ controversy. On this he said, “Many times even the director does not realize that he is objectifying a woman. But if an actor or actress feels like this, then he should express his views and protest.”
He said that artists have every right to set their own limits. If they find any scene, costume or presentation uncomfortable then they can express their opinion on it. According to Kangana, communication and consent are very important in the film industry.
What is the ‘Peddi’ controversy?
Questions are being raised on social media on the way Jhanvi Kapoor’s character Achiamma has been presented in the recently released film ‘Peddi’. Many users say that in some scenes of the film, the camera angles and presentation seem to objectify the female character. Apart from this, a debate broke out regarding a romantic scene, in which questions were raised on the portrayal of consent and romance.
After the controversy escalated, the film’s director Buchi Babu Sana had to give a clarification. He said that his intention was not to insult any woman. Respecting the sentiments of the audience, he apologized and assured changes in the controversial scenes.
Many stars expressed their opinion
Not only Kangana, many other actors have also reacted to the ‘Peddi’ controversy. Actress Nithya Menen said that objectification of women is not a problem of just one industry, but it is seen in cinema all over the world. He appealed to the artists to put forward their views strongly when necessary.
Kareena Kapoor Khan also expressed her opinion on this issue. She said that objectification of women is not necessary to look attractive or sensitive on screen. An artist can leave a deep impression on the audience even without an inflammatory presentation.
At present the debate regarding ‘Peddi’ is going on. A large section on social media is questioning the presentation of women in the film, while on the other hand the film team is trying to calm the controversy. In such a situation, Kangana Ranaut’s statement given to PTI can further intensify the discussion on how female characters should be shown in films and how much importance should be given to the consent of the artists.
