A 49-year-old man was arrested at California’s Sacramento International Airport after authorities allegedly discovered an explosive device and several suspicious items in his possession while he attempted to pass through a security checkpoint.

According to federal prosecutors, the Sacramento resident was detained on Saturday after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers identified what was later determined to be a viable explosive device among his belongings.

The man was reportedly wearing latex gloves and a scarf covering his face when he arrived at the airport checkpoint.

Investigators said he was also carrying a torch lighter, a knife, zip ties and five mobile phones.

One of the phones allegedly had a 15-minute timer running, while another displayed a message reading: “We will be awaiting your call.”

Photographs released by prosecutors showed a cardboard tube resembling the size of a toilet paper roll fitted with a green fuse.

Bomb technicians later examined the device and concluded that both the powder and fuse were functional.

According to the US Attorney’s Office, the device was powerful enough that, if detonated near an aircraft window during flight, it could potentially damage the aircraft and lead to a loss of cabin pressure.

Federal authorities have charged the man with unlawful possession of explosive material in an airport.

He made his first appearance in federal court in Sacramento on Wednesday.

His attorney, Meghan McLoughlin, said the government’s allegations do not tell the full story and that the legal process would ultimately reveal additional details about the case.

Investigators have not publicly disclosed a possible motive, nor have they indicated whether the suspect intended to board a flight.

The case remains under investigation by federal authorities.
