After the change of power in West Bengal, now accounts of illegal extortion or bribe (cut-money) are being demanded from the leaders in every village. In many districts, local leaders associated with Trinamool are facing allegations of taking bribes in the name of providing benefits of government schemes. Amidst the increasing pressure, some leaders have also started returning the money collected in the name of cut money. In Ghughumari area of Cooch Behar, local leaders made announcement through loudspeaker asking to return the money to the people. The commission taken from 14 beneficiaries of the housing scheme in Subhashpalli area of Mathabhanga city of Cooch Behar was refunded. BJP leaders claim that some beneficiaries even performed puja at the local temple after getting the money back. Village Deputy Head in Murshidabad arrested for taking commission. Villagers lodged a complaint against Village Deputy Head Sirajul Shaikh for taking cut-money under Banglar Housing Scheme in Nutangram, Murshidabad, after which the police arrested him. The villagers allege that Rs 5,000 to 15,000 were taken in the name of providing a house. In Namkhana of South 24 Parganas, Rs 5,000 each taken in the name of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana were returned to the villagers. Madhav Chandra Laya, member of Shibrampur gram panchayat of Namkhana, claimed that he himself returned the money to 45 villagers without any pressure. He alleged that this money was taken under party pressure and there was collusion between senior Panchayat officials and TMC leaders. However, no formal police complaint has been filed yet in the matter. Names of 173 men have been found in the list of beneficiaries of Laxmir Bhandar Scheme being run for women in Dhubulia of Nadia district. Money was also withdrawn from these accounts from February till now. District Magistrate Shrikant Palli said that after investigation, these names have been removed from the list. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has claimed that out of about 2.2 crore beneficiaries of Lakshmir Bhandar Yojana, about 30 lakh beneficiaries may be fake. He has also talked about SIT investigation and investigation from money laundering angle in this matter. Commission formed for investigation, complaints can be made directly. On May 18, the state government has constituted an ‘Institutional Commission’ to investigate alleged cut-money, misuse of government funds and financial irregularities. Retired judge Vishwajit Basu will preside over it. The government hopes that after the launch of the commission, people will be able to lodge complaints directly. BJP accused TMC of threatening villagers. Local BJP leader Surendra Barman alleged that under the TMC government, villagers were threatened that if they did not pay money, they would not get the benefits of government schemes or land transactions would be disrupted. However, the TMC leadership of Cooch Behar district said that the party has no connection with any kind of illegal extortion or cut-money.
