Myanmar President General Min Aung Hlaing, who is on a four-day visit to India, has assured that his country’s territory will not be allowed to be used against New Delhi’s security interests. In a briefing on Monday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the President conveyed his assurance during talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Myanmar. Both sides underscored the importance of preventing the misuse of sovereign territory for activities inimical to their security interests. The President of Myanmar, in particular, reiterated the assurance that Myanmar’s territory would not be permitted to be used against India’s security interests,” Misri said.
Aung Hlaing is on a four-day visit to India from May 30 to June 2 at the invitation of PM Modi. The visit has focused on strengthening cooperation in technology, energy, infrastructure, trade and security.
On Monday, PM Modi and the Myanmar President held wide-ranging discussions aimed at deepening bilateral ties across multiple sectors.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he had a “productive meeting” with Aung Hlaing and expressed appreciation that India was chosen for the Myanmar leader’s first foreign visit since assuming office last month.
PM Modi also noted that it was particularly significant that Aung Hlaing began his visit from Bodh Gaya, describing it as receiving the blessings of Lord Buddha.
The Prime Minister said the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of India-Myanmar relations and reaffirmed the importance of bilateral ties. He emphasised that Myanmar occupies a key place in India’s “Neighbourhood First”, “Act East” and Indo-Pacific policies.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), PM Modi also reiterated India’s commitment to remaining Myanmar’s “trusted neighbour, reliable partner and steadfast first responder” during times of crisis, in line with India’s Neighbourhood First, Act East and MAHASAGAR policies.
ECONOMIC ENGAGEMENTS
In his press briefing, Press Secretary Misri said that the visit has also focused heavily on economic engagement.
Misri noted that bilateral trade between the two countries currently stands at slightly over $2 billion, with India’s exports exceeding $600 million and Myanmar’s exports to India crossing $1.5 billion.
During the visit, Aung Hlaing attended an India-Myanmar Business Conclave and also visited the NTPC Energy Technology Centre in Greater Noida to explore cooperation in the energy sector.
“The focus of the visit is technology, energy and infrastructure cooperation,” Misri said.
The Myanmar President is scheduled to travel to Mumbai before concluding his India visit.
He also extended an invitation to PM Modi to visit Myanmar on mutually convenient dates.
